Description	:	David John DeLong passed away Wednesday, May 24, 2017. He was born Aug. 24, 1920, to Charlie and Kate Titus DeLong at Lake City, Iowa. Dave married Phyllis Ione Gray March 1, 194, and she survives. He is also survived by his children, Danny of Beatrice, Donna (David) Jorgensen of Central City, and Deanne (Gregory) Heidrich of Indianapolis, Ind.; grandchildren, Michael (Traci) Jorgensen of Papillion, Matthew Heidrich of Los Angeles, Calif., and Joseph Heidrich of Arlington, Va.; great-grandchildren, Trevor and Tatum Jorgensen of Papillion; and brother, Lawrence (Shirley) DeLong of San Angelo, Texas. He is also survived by his children, Danny of Beatrice, Donna (David) Jorgensen of Central City, and Deanne (Gregory) Heidrich of Indianapolis, Ind.; grandchildren, Michael (Traci) Jorgensen of Papillion, Matthew Heidrich of Los Angeles, Calif., and Joseph Heidrich of Arlington, Va.; great-grandchildren, Trevor and Tatum Jorgensen of Papillion; and brother, Lawrence (Shirley) DeLong of San Angelo, Texas. Dave was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Donald; and sisters, LaVern and Dorothy. Dave attended country school and graduated from Lytton, Iowa High School in 1939. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy that fall and graduated from basic training at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station, Great Lakes, Ill. He was assigned to the aircraft carrier, USS Yorktown. After training in the Pacific, the Yorktown transferred to the Atlantic to protect convoys of supply and troop ships going to Europe. The ship was in port in Norfolk, Va., when war was declared in December 1941. The Yorktown transited the Panama Canal to the Pacific where it served in all the major Pacific battles until it was sunk by enemy torpedoes during The Battle of Midway. Dave spent six hours in the Pacific Ocean with his shipmates until it was determined to be safe enough for rescue ships to return for the crew. He was then assigned to refit the USS California, which had been damaged during the Pearl Harbor attack in 1941, and then served on the California during numerous Pacific battles including the liberation of the Philippines. After his discharge in 1945, Dave returned to Lake City, Iowa, to farm with his father and later on his own at Sac City, Iowa. He and Phyllis moved to Callaway, in 1956. Dave worked for Custer Public Power District until his retirement in 1984, first as a lineman out of the Callaway office, then as the manager of the Callaway office, and finally as a right-of-way acquisition manager and as a supervisor of transmission line construction. Dave was a member of Callaway United Methodist Church serving on many of its committees and as a summer church camp counselor. Dave was a member of the Callaway Chamber of Commerce, serving as president; the American Legion, serving as Commander; and the Callaway Golf Club, serving as president. Dave was a long time member of B.P.O.E. Elks Lodge 1688. He served as Exalted Ruler, District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler, Nebraska State Elks Association and Trustee. Dave was a 32-year Scoutmaster for Troop 235 in Callaway and kept in touch with many of the young men through the years. Memorial services will be at Rose Hill Cemetery in Callaway, at a later time and date to be announced by the family. Published in Custer County Chief on June 1, 2017
