Phyllis is survived by her children Danny of Beatrice; Donna (David) Jorgensen of Central City; Deanne (Gregory) Heidrich of Indianapolis, Ind.; and grandchildren Michael (Traci) Jorgensen of Papillion; Matthew Heidrich of Los Angeles, Calif.; and Joseph Heidrich of Arlington, Va.; great-grandchildren Trevor and Tatum Jorgensen of Papillion. She was born in Callaway, Neb. Nov. 4, 1924 to Calvin and Stella Drum Gray and spent most of her life there. Phyllis is survived by her children Danny of Beatrice; Donna (David) Jorgensen of Central City; Deanne (Gregory) Heidrich of Indianapolis, Ind.; and grandchildren Michael (Traci) Jorgensen of Papillion; Matthew Heidrich of Los Angeles, Calif.; and Joseph Heidrich of Arlington, Va.; great-grandchildren Trevor and Tatum Jorgensen of Papillion. Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband Dave; her parents; and brother Calvin Charlie. Phyllis was a graduate of Callaway High School in 1942 and attended Gradwohl School of Laboratory and X-ray Technique in St. Louis, Mo. After graduation, Phyllis worked at several hospitals in the Midwest as a lab and X-ray technician. While working in Sterling, Ill., she was introduced to a young Navy machinist mate Dave DeLong. They were married March 1, 1946. Dave and Phyllis made their home in Sac City, Iowa where Dave farmed and Phyllis worked in the Storm Lake and Sac City hospitals. In 1956 they moved to Callaway with their three children. Phyllis worked for the Callaway Telephone Company as an operator and for Callaway United Methodist Church as secretary. She returned to hospital work in 1970 in Broken Bow and moved to the Callaway Hospital in 1980, retiring in 1989. Dave and Phyllis traveled a great deal during retirement. Highlights for Phyllis were a trip to Israel and two trips to Germany. For their 60th wedding anniversary, they cruised through the Panama Canal. Phyllis was a member of Callaway United Methodist Church and its predecessor churches, serving on many committees and boards and as a delegate to the annual conferences. She was active in United Methodist Women serving at the local, district, and state levels for many years. Phyllis was a member of the Callaway Women's Club until it disbanded, the Callaway American Legion Auxiliary, serving in many capacities at the local and county levels; the Callaway Golf Association; County 8 & 40; and the Callaway Sorosis Club. She enjoyed gardening, reading and crossword puzzles. Funeral services will be Friday Sept. 7, 2018 at 1 p.m. at the Callaway United Methodist Church. A private family service will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery following the service. Published in Custer County Chief on Sept. 6, 2018
