Description	:	David John Neely, an old veteran of the Civil War and an early settler in Iowa, died at his home in this city last Thursday morning at 8 o’clock of Bright’s Disease after an illness lasting several weeks. Funeral services were held from the M. E. Church Saturday morning at ten o’clock conducted by Rev. Vedder and the Odd Fellows Interment was made in the Villisca Cemetery. David J. Funeral services were held from the M. E. Church Saturday morning at ten o’clock conducted by Rev. Vedder and the Odd Fellows Interment was made in the Villisca Cemetery. David J. Neely, was born in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, September 30, 1941 and died in this city March 1, 1906, aged 64 years and 5 months. He was united in marriage to Mary A. Graver at Knoxville, Illinois, September 25, 1867. To them were born three children, two of whom survive the father, Mrs. Jennie E. Slogan of Elmond, Kansas and George W. Neely of this city. He also leaves three brothers and two sisters. His wife died the third of last July. Mr. Neely came to Iowa in 1871, living in Taylor and Adams Counties, until 1881 when he came to Villisca where he has since lived a worthy citizen, a kind neighbor, and a faithful friend to all our people. When the Civil War came on, he enlisted in the 39th Regiment of Illinois Volunteers and served therein four and one half years and then was honorably discharged. On Sunday morning, July 23, 1906, he was converted and united with the Methodist Episcopal Church of this place and since that day, as far as his health would permit, was always in the regular service of the church. During his last sickness, he often expressed himself as being ready for death whenever it might come, it being to him the door which opened into the larger and better life. His faith did not weaken when death approached, but grew stronger in the Lord to the very end. He has gone to answer the last great roll call where he has already reported for a more perfect and enduring service. He is not death but liveth to die no more.
