Read More	NOTE: From historical papers left by Hazel Mildred Smith we find the following information: One of the first three houses in Baccaro was that owned by David Kirby Smith (1791-1887), grandson of Solomon Smith Sr., one of the original grantees of the Barrington Township. After serving two years on garrison duty at shelburne during the War of 1812, he sought to make his home at Baccaro. The chosen site was about three-quarters of a mile northeast of the present Baccaro Light, being a portion of Lot 105 which he purchased from John Smith. In keeping with the architecture of that day it was a plain square building with a porticoed front door facing the water. The chimney occupied the center of the building and the spacious fireplace in the kitchen furnished the only means of heating until a later date. On the ground floor were four rooms; the front door opening into that called the parlor. In the course of years improvements were made and this pioneer homestead became one of the best in the village. The three acres of cultivated land produced crops of buckwheat, rye, hay, and vegetables of various kinds. About 8 acres of pasture land furnished grazing area for the seven head of cattle kept. In the garden on each side of the front door was to be found a profusion of flowers and herbs. The kitchen with its painted floor, built-in cupboards, and furniture which was made in Cape Negro, was really the living-room, where the family spent most of their time; the front room being reserved for important occasions. The furnishings there were of better quality, all the choice china was displayed in the parlor cupboard. There was no front hall and the stairway to the second floor was in the kitchen. Ascending thus, one would find two sleeping rooms; the remainder of space being used as a storeroom for the old spinning wheel, wind blades, and looms, indicative of the household industry. Here too, were the coffee and spice mills, tinder box, candle moulds and other utensils were relics of earlier days. This landmark was taken apart in 1884 and used in the construction of a house.
