Also surviving are two sons: Jody R. (Julie), Albion, MI, and Tyson J., Elida; two sisters: LouAnn (Lynwood) Patin, Angleton, TX, and Karla (Preston) Smith, Fort Smith, AR; father-in-law, Donald Hostetler, West Liberty; three Linda (Lynn) Bontrager, Cambridge, Sherry May, Walker, LA, and Debbie (Dale) Yoder, Belleville, PA; and a grandson. A 1967 graduate of Archbold High School and Hesston College, KS, and Goshen College, IN, he began his teaching and coaching career in 1972 at Iowa Mennonite School, Kalona, IA. In 1975, he started teachering, coach and Athletic Director in the Elida Schools, retiring in 2010. He was currently serving as Ticket Manager at Elida Schools and was Commissioner of the Western Buckeye League and Northwest Central Conference. He was a proud member of the Elida community and loved his Elida Bulldogs. He dedicated his life to mentoring others and making a difference in the lives of many. He loved staying busy by officiating, umpiring, working with the Lima Umpires Association and attending many sporting events. He especially enjoyed watching his sons, Jody, coach basketball at Albion College, MI, and Tyson, play tennis for many years. He was an avid golfer and fan of the Detroit Tigers, loved traveling and hiking in the mountains, breakfast with friends, sports talk radio, and relaxing in the driveway with neighbors. He was inducted into the OHSAA Officials Hall of Fame, Amateur Softball Association Hall of Honor (umpire), Ohio Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Honor (official), and was a member of Lima Community Church. Most of all he was a loving husband, dad, grandpa and brother. Services will be at Lima Community Church, Lima, with Pastor Preston Smith officiating. Burial will be in Salem Mennonite Cemetery.
