Memorial services and interment of ashes will be at 11 a.m. May 24 at Minden (Neb.) Cemetery with military honors by the Minden American Legion and the Heartwell Veterans of Foreign Wars. Read More	SACRAMENTO, Calif. — David Raymond "Ray" Cronin, 89, of Sacramento died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2013, in Sacramento. Memorial services and interment of ashes will be at 11 a.m. May 24 at Minden (Neb.) Cemetery with military honors by the Minden American Legion and the Heartwell Veterans of Foreign Wars. Layton-Craig Funeral Home in Minden is in charge of arrangements. He was born Dec. 3, 1923, in Minden to Daniel and Della (Lewis) Cronin. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Ardyce; daughter and son-in-law, Lynne and Jim Weddell; son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Sharon Cronin; brothers, Richard and John Cronin; and sisters, Della Rounds, Vivian Holden, Edna Stickwehs and Loretta Emal. He passed away surrounded by his loving family. He grew up on a farm near Minden and attended local schools. He had 13 brothers and sisters. His father, Pops, had a well-rounded farm crew. In 1942, Ray answered the call to service and joined the U.S. Navy. He served proudly on the aircraft carrier USS Bogue. The Bogue is famous for chasing an enemy submarine from the Pacific into the Atlantic. Aircraft from the Bogue finally sank the submarine as it was trying to transfer much-needed crude oil to a German U-boat. In 1945, Ray returned to his hometown and attended Kearney State College where he earned his teaching credentials. He taught for a short time in rural Nebraska before moving to California to teach. He taught school for nearly 30 years. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Danny, Lawrence and Jim Cronin; half-brother, Ralph Grogan; and sisters, Irene Cronin, Mary Tracy and Nora Walentine.
