Laurie, Sr., 91, former Mayor of Atchison, KS, passed away on Sunday, November 29, 2009 at the Alders Gate Village, Topeka, KS. David was born on June 13, 1918 in Atchison, Kansas, the son of John and Hazel (Carrico) Laurie, Sr. He graduated from Atchison High School in 1936 and attended Kansas State University for one year. Mr. Laurie worked as a molder, then casting foreman for the former LFM and Rockwell International of Atchison for over 41 years before retiring in 1980. He served eight years as a City Commissioner for the City of Atchison, six of those years as Mayor of the City. Mr. Laurie was a charter member of the MO-KAN Regional Council, serving as Chairman from 1980 through 2006 and as a member until 2008. He was a Board member of the Kansas League of Municipalities, had received the Rockwell International's Good Citizenship Award in 1981, and served on the Board of National Associations of Regional Councils, and the National League of Municipalities Public Safety Commission. In addition, he helped organize the local Midget Football program and was active in the American Legion Baseball program and YMCA Basketball League. He served on the Atchison City Recreation Commission, Kansas Youth Center of Atchison Advisory Board and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He was a member of the First Christian Church, an Elder Emeritus, served on the Scholarship Committee as Chairman for many years, the Active Masonic Lodge #158, the Atchison YMCA, was an avid golfer, a member of several coffee clubs, and the Tuesday Lunch Canada Fishing Club. Mr. Laurie was married to Geraldine Merritt on September 6, 1939 at the First Christian Church, Atchison, KS. Mrs. Laurie survives him of the home in Topeka, KS. Additional survivors include three sons; John Laurie, Overland Park, KS, David (Claudette) Laurie, Manhattan, KS, and Phil (Kay) Laurie, Topeka, KS, two sisters; Letha Colton, Tulsa, OK, and Betty Berger, Greensboro, NC, nine grandchildren, and twelve great grandchildren. His parents, two brothers; James Laurie and John Laurie, Jr., and four sisters; Annie Laurie Johnson, Hazel Oaks, Barbara Conner, and Sandra Goodwin all preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, December 3, 2009 at the First Christian Church, with Rev. Lee Hendon Officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery. A Masonic Service will be held at 6:15 p.m., on Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with visitation to follow until 8:30 PM.
