Description	:	David was the son of David Eichelberger and Amelia (Slaughter) Eichelberger (c.1800 - 18 Dec 1865), who married on 31 Jan 1822 in Berkeley County, (now) West Virginia. David was born in Maryland and Amelia was born in Virginia. Her granddaughter Sarah Frances died a week before. Neither obit mentioned the place of burial. Obituary provided by #46840882: Shepherdstown Register Shepherdstown, Jefferson County, West Virginia 27 Aug 1886 An Ex-Editer's Death. Mr. D. Smith Eichelberger, of Martinsburg, formerly editor of the Statesman, died at his home on Sunday afternoon at the age of 60 years. He established the Independent Democrat at Charlestown before the war, enlisted in the Confederate army, and was prisoner at Camp Chase, Ohio, eighteen months. He went to Berkeley county in 1869 and established the Valley Star, afterwards known as the Statesman, which he edited for thirteen years. He retired from newspaper work three years ago on account of ill-health. Mr. Eichelberger was an uncompromising Democrat, and claimed to have been the first editor to suggest the name of Grover Cleveland for President. Deceased leaves a wife and seven children.
