Description	:	David Stipe died at his home at East San Diego, California, Friday, December 13, 1912, from a kidney trouble of long standing. David Stipe was born in Hampshire, West Virginia, November 15, 1832, and was therefore 80 years and 23 days old at the time of his death. He came to Iowa in 1852 and settled near Grant, Montgomery County, Iowa. It was while in this service in the trenches during... Read More	David Stipe died at his home at East San Diego, California, Friday, December 13, 1912, from a kidney trouble of long standing. David Stipe was born in Hampshire, West Virginia, November 15, 1832, and was therefore 80 years and 23 days old at the time of his death. He came to Iowa in 1852 and settled near Grant, Montgomery County, Iowa. He served in the war of the rebellion in Company I, 23rd Iowa and took part in all the campaigns of that regiment up to the surrender of Vicksburg. It was while in this service in the trenches during the storming of Vicksburg in 1863 that he contracted the disease which had troubled him these many years and finally caused his death. On May 25, 1869 David Stipe was united in marriage to Miss Amy Overman, who with five children survive him. The children are; Hon. William F. Stipe, of Clarinda; Elijah of Helen, Montana; Mrs. Jennie Horton of north of Villisca; Guy of San Diego, California; and Mrs. Blanche Prathero of El Toro, California. Mr. Stipe was a member of the M. E. Church and also the Grand Army of the Republic. Mr. Stipe was a cooper, learning the trade in his father’s hop, but for 25 years, preceding 1902 he owned and managed a farm near Villisca. In that year on account of poor health of both he and his wife, they moved to California where they lived until his death. Upon the receiving of the news of his father’s death, W. F. Stipe of Clarinda left for San Diego, California to accompany the remains back to this place. They arrived in Villisca Wednesday, December 25, and the funeral services were conducted from the M. E. Church Thursday at half past two o’clock, by Rev. J. W. Taylor, pastor. The interment was in the Villisca Cemetery. The wife and mother was quite seriously ill at the time of her husband’s death and was unable to attend the funeral. She is still in very poor health.
