Narrow Escape Of Three Others - David Tortington Becomes Confused and Misses Opportunity to Get to Safety - Adjala Township Scene of Fatal Fire - One Suffers from Exposure Adjala township was the scene of a fire fatality shortly after 10 o’clock Thursday night. The residence of Hugh Tortington, lot 8, 1st line, Adjala, was totally destroyed and David Tortington, brother of the owner, was burned to death. He was 45 years of age and unmarried. Fire Burst Through Roof - The inmates of the house consisted of David and Hugh Tortington, the latter’s son, Claude, 32 years of age, and Mrs. Bagnell, the housekeeper. The latter slept in a room on the ground floor and the others occupied rooms upstairs. The inmates retired at an early hour and shortly after 10 Hugh was awakened and discovered flames coming through the roof of the kitchen, a frame building adjoining the house, which was a log structure partly cemented. In the kitchen was a wood range and it was the custom to put wood in the oven to dry. Previous to retiring Mrs. Bagnell removed the wood from the oven, but there was still fire in the stove. As soon as Tortington saw the blaze he went downstairs and opened the kitchen door, but was met with a burst of flame in the face, which scorched his hair and whiskers. He hastily closed the door and awakened the housekeeper and then went upstairs and awakened the other occupants. Claude escaped by sliding down a blanket and Hugh went back to get his brother. The latter said he would follow Hugh to the window. Hugh jumped out, but David did not follow and nothing could be done to rescue him from the flames, which by this time were sweeping through the entire house. Later the remains of David’s body were found at the foot of the stairs. He had evidently become confused in the smoke and excitement and tried to make his escape by way of the stairs, but was overcome before he could do so. Claude Tortington and the other inmates suffered considerable from exposure. David Tortington was very highly respected and his sad fate is very much regretted by all who knew him. Mrs. Sidney Richardson of Caledon, near town, is a niece of deceased. Orangeville Banner, November 20, 1919, page 7 - Burned to Death Sad Occurrence in Adjala last Thursday Night. David Tortington, a farmer aged 50 years, residing on lot 8, con. 2, Adjala, was burned to death in his home about midnight last Thursday. The other inmates of the house, Hugh Tortington, a brother of the unfortunate man, Mrs. Geo. Bagnell, who kept house for the two brothers, and Claude Tortington, a son of Hugh Tortington, has the good fortune to escape from the burning house. Hugh Tortington was the last one of the household to retire for the night. He went to bed about ten o'clock leaving everything in good shape and very little fire in the kitchen stove. A couple of hours later he awakened in his room upstairs to find the house filled with smoke. When he attempted to go downstairs to investigate he found the kitchen a mass of flames and was forced to beat a hasty retreat. He quickly awakened his son and brother and then made a second attempt to descend the stairs, but finding this impossible the father and son made their escape through an upstairs window expecting that David would follow them. Mrs. Bagnell slept in a downstairs room and they assisted her to get out of the house through a downstairs window and then made the startling discovery that David was not to be found. When the fire had died out sufficiently to permit the neighbors to explore the ruins the charred remains of the unfortunate victim were discovered in the cellar near the foot of the stairway. He had evidently partly dressed and then attempted to escape by the stairway, but was overcome by the heat and smoke. His watch was recovered and had stopped at ten minutes after midnight. The heartrending occurrence caused widespread gloom and consternation in the Connor neighborhood, where the family has resided for many years. Deceased was unmarried and was a very quiet, inoffensive man. There was a very large attendance at the funeral, which was held from the home of Mr. Wm Lee, on the adjoining farm, to St. John's church cemetery, 7th Line, Mono, on Saturday afternoon. Rev. A. C. McCollum conducted the services at the house and grave. It is thought that the fire must have been started by a spark from the kitchen stove. The house was burned to the ground.
