Description	:	D. W. MONTGOMERY, farmer, P. O. Elkton, was born in Montour County, Penn., in 1828, and was raised there on a farm, receiving a common-school education, and he took a course in the Wyoming Seminary, graduating in 1847. In 1855, went to Michigan and located in Cass County, remaining there two years; then back to Pennsylvania, and, in 1858, settled in Wisconsin, locating in Pepin County; remained there nine years, engaged in farming and merchandising. Elkton, was born in Montour County, Penn., in 1828, and was raised there on a farm, receiving a common-school education, and he took a course in the Wyoming Seminary, graduating in 1847. In 1855, went to Michigan and located in Cass County, remaining there two years; then back to Pennsylvania, and, in 1858, settled in Wisconsin, locating in Pepin County; remained there nine years, engaged in farming and merchandising. In 1867, he went to Iowa and put in a stock of goods at Red Oak, remaining there until 1870; then came to Nebraska and located in the Blue River, pre-empting 160 acres of land in Elkton Precinct, where he has since lived. He has added to his land and now owns about 1,200 acres; has made extensive improvements, and, in company with Mr. Follmer, is extensively engaged in stock-raising. In the winter of 1870-71, got up a petition and sent to the Governor, to have an election called to organize the county and elect officers. They did not hear from him, so Mr. Montgomery went to Lincoln and called on the Governor, in company with Col. Cropsey, the Senator for that portion of the State. The Governor asked Mr. Montgomery how they were getting along in Nuckolls County, and was surprised when told that they had not heard anything in regard to the proclamation of the Governor, and arrangements were made and the election was called for in June. Mr. Montgomery went to Omaha to see about getting some lands, and made arrangements with the Omaha & Northwestern, who owned the timber lands in Nuckolls County, and other parties of the South Platte country, and was appointed Land Commissioner of the South Platte country. Was elected County Surveyor and was Deputy Clerk for a time. The business of the county was all done at his place for some time. He then established the first real estate office in the county and continued in the business until 1880. Was married, in 1854, in Montour County, Penn., to Miss Catherine Follmer, of that place, who died in 1872 (sic). They had four children, viz., Mamie, Caddie, Clifton and May T. In 1873 (sic), he was married again, to Miss Florence Follmer, of Montour County, Penn., by whom he has two children--Robert and Grace. He is a member of the Nelson Lodge, No. 77, A., F. & A. Montgomery was born in Northumberland county (sic), Pa., March 30th, 1828, and died at Nelson, Neb., Jan. 18th, 1916. A life of 87 years, 9 months and 19 days can surely be called a full measure of mundane pilgrimage. But the departed had more than mere years as the portion of his life. He was a sturdy man who did his share of life's work. Having secured the needed education he taught school in his native county and the prpared (sic) himself for civil engineering at Kingston Seminary. In early manhood he moved to Wisconsin, then to Iowa and later to Nebraska, where he settled in Nuckolls county (sic) on the homestead by the Blue in 1870. Mr. Montgomery has thus been identified with the early history of the country. He helped to organize Nuckolls County and laid out the City of Nelson, for he was County Surveyor, County Clerk and County Superintendent all in one person. But those were the days of pioneer experiences, and the early settlers well remember the man of strength and honor, counsel and kindness that the departed was. Friends, neighbors and tenants alike unite in giving testimony to these qualities in the man. Mr. Montgomery was for years a moving spirit and did much to nurture through the discouraging days of its infancy what has since developed into the best County Fair in Nebraska. He was never too busy to lend a little time and energy to the advancement of this and other instituions (sic) that meant beter (sic) things for succeeding generations. Mr. Montgomery was a life long member of the Presbyterian church and Elder for many years. Their home was ever the haven of the pioneer preacher in the early days. He is survived by his wife and five children, while four children have preceded him into the better world. Thus do those who have laid the foundation of our community life pass into the great Beyond one by one We mourn their departure and sympathize with those in sorrow, but since their life work was done, we are grateful for what they have accomplished and look upon their example as our inspiration. The funeral was held from the Presbyterian church at half past one o'clock Wednesday afternoon, where his Pastor Rev. F.G. Knauer conducted a most impressive service in the presence of a large number of old time friends and citizens of Nuckolls county (sic). The remains were taken to Edgar on the afternoon train and were laid to rest at that place. the Masonic Order of which deceased was a member for many years, were in charge of the burial.
