Wheeler, one of the pioneer citizens of Sioux County, died at his home in this city about ten o'clock last Thursday evening, following an illness of nearly eighteen months from cancer of the stomach. For more than a year he was confined to his home with the full knowledge that his disease was incurable, but through it all he was a patient sufferer and bore his ills with great fortitude, his only hope being that the end might come speedily. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Baptist Church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. John Erb, and many friends and neighbors gathered there to pay their last respects to his memory. The remains were taken to Ireton Monday morning, accompanied by the relatives, and interment was made in the cemetery at that place. Dealton Wheeler was born at Stewart, Wis., July 4, 1856, and died at Hawarden March 4, 1915, at the age of 59 years and 8 months. At the age of 21 he came to Sioux County and for many years resided on a farm in Eagle Township. He moved to Hawarden nearly twenty years ago and continued to make his home in this city until his death. For about ten years he was employed as mail carrier on one of the rural routes out of Hawarden and held that position until forced by sickness to retire. In 1882 he was united in marriage with Miss Vina Garrett who survives him. Six children were born to them, but three of them preceded their father in death, a daughter who was taken at the tender age of ten months, another daughter who attained the age of twelve years, and a son who was stricken in the full bloom of young manhood at the age of twenty-one. The children who survive are Albert Wheeler, a rural route carrier of this city, Mrs. E. C. Walker of Ortley, S.D., and Ralph Wheeler, who lives at home with his mother and succeeded his father as mail carrier. He is also survived by five brothers and three sisters, D.A. and W. R. Wheeler of Ireton, R. L. Wheeler of Monroe, Wis., C. E. and Miss Laura Wheeler of Philip, S.D., Mrs. Cora Forncrook of Hinckley, Minn., I. J. Wheeler of Barstow, Calif., and Mrs. Mary Thomas of Ireton. D. Wheeler was a man who made and held warm friends easily. Coming her in an early day he grew up with the country and has been an integral part of the life of the community. He was a splended neighbor, generous to a fault, and during his years of service as mail carrier, earned the admiration and respect of the patrons of his route through his ever genial manner and the many accommodations which he always stood ready to extend. He never stooped to injure a man and his passing will be mourned by many who were always glad to count him a friend. Hawarden Independent, March 11, 1915
