Survivors include wife, Doris, Shelby; son, David White and wife, Laura, of Walton; daughter, Annelle Hyland and husband, Terry, of Omaha; daughter, Denise Braasch and husband, Byron, of Bellevue; and son, Robert White and wife, Nitha, of Shelby; grandchildren, Michaela (White) Ochs and husband, Wes, Sean White and wife, Heather, Allison (Hyland) Rogers and husband, Ben, Brittany Braasch, Jared Hyland, Brandon Braasch, Trevor White, and Chatrice White; and great-grandchild, Elsey Rogers. Dean was born May 3, 1926, in Shelby. He graduated from Shelby High School in 1943 and farmed with his father and brothers south of Shelby. From 1951 to 1953, during the Korean War, he served in the United States Marine Corps, working as an office clerk at Camp Pendleton, Calif. He married Doris Kumpf on Feb. 13, 1952, at the Evangelical United Brotherhood Church in Shelby. After Dean received his honorable discharge, he and Doris moved back to Shelby, where Dean continued to farm until his retirement in 1994. Dean was a Mason and a longtime member of Shelby United Methodist Church. Dean enjoyed playing bridge and sheephead, and built, created or repaired many items of fine workmanship such as furniture, toys and clocks in his garage workshop. He also raised a large garden every summer. Over the years, Dean acquired a fleet of vintage Allis-Chalmers tractors and found great satisfaction in repairing and restoring them to prime condition. (He and other family members drove a dozen of his tractors in Shelby's 125th anniversary celebration parade.) Until the end of his life, Dean always enjoyed a good laugh, and was well known for his sharp wit and clever sense of humor. He was well read on current affairs and was not shy about expressing his opinion on issues he felt strongly about, using honest, common sense language to state his point of view. Dean's greatest joy was his family. Doris was the love of his life for 59 years, and he took great pride in his children and grandchildren, and their accomplishments. When his children were in high school, he rarely missed one of their athletic contests, and attended his grandchildren's games whenever possible. His family was always at the center of his attention and he proudly shared stories about them with friends and strangers alike. Dean was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday at Shelby United Methodist Church. Interment will be in the Shelby Cemetery with military rites by the Shelby Legion Post #296.
