In spite of the record number of entries, quite a number of contestants missed having a perfect clue list, and the entry of Lee Scheradella, which was drawn, missed the jackpot by two clues... one omitted and one erroneously included. Omitted was "Native," added to Gillenwaters ad in the business directory on the classified page (This clue was missed by quite a few people, possibly because it read so logically). Scheradella also had an extra clue, "now in stock," which sounds logical enough all right, but which Sentinel staffers are unable to find in the sponsored ads, Scheradella wins $7.50, and the jackpot next week will be $141.00. Native of Area Wilkins, a native of this area, has three brothers and one sister. At the time the advice "Ask for Bill" was put in the Goldendale Builders Supply ad, proprietor Bill Sester was intended. Upon having it brought to attention that one Wilkins brother was named Bill, that item was added to the clue list as optional, right either way. Other changes in the standing ads rattled a number of entrants, who included such merchants' slogans as 'every blooming thing.' An amazingly large number of entrants included the phrase "the rock bottom" from Olsens' Goodyear tire ad, although quite a number of different explanations were given to justify it. Some say it pertained to the site of his new home, and others stated it pertained to his logging roads. One contestant commented that the 5'11' was incorrect, but still a clue. (That seemed a bit short to the clue-gatherer too, but Wilkins insisted.) Bert J. (Delbert John according to report of many contestants) and Vera Wilkins have two children, Marilyn and Fred, and now occupy a fine new home on the east edge of the city, the first house built in the now populous Hawthorne Addition. Bert attended local schools as a student of Professors Aitken and Dakin. Operator of a logging company for 21 years, Bert also has extensive ranch holdings on which he raises cattle and wheat. Wilkins polled 185 votes for mayor in the recent city primary election on write-ins, without being an avowed candidate. He has been master of the F&AM lodge, and has belonged to Shrine for 10 years. ************************************************* The Goldendale Sentinel, February 25, 1960: Bert Wilkins Withdraws Name From Mayor Contest** Bert Wilkins, who received 181 write-in votes in the recent primary election to edge out Harold Morgan as a candidate for mayor, announced Tuesday night that he has declined the nomination. Wilkins' withdrawal will place Morgan's name back on the election ballot with incumbent mayor George Nesbitt. Nesbitt received 285 votes in the primary. Morgan was the only other candidate, but his 104 votes were topped by the write-ins in favor of Wilkins. Wilkins cited press of business activities as his reason for withdrawing his name from the ballot. In an open letter to Goldendale residents he said: TO THE CITIZENS OF GOLDENDALE: In the city primary election, held February 9, 1960, many of you honored me by writing in my name as a candidate for mayor, and as a candidate for councilman-at-large. Since the election, I have given considerable thought to the question of whether or not I should accept the nomination for the position of mayor, and permit my name to go upon the general election ballot. After much consideration, I have decided that my personal business affairs, both in my logging activities and in my ranch properties, will require my undivided attention, and that it would not be fair to myself, my family or to the voters of Goldendale to be a candidate for a position that would require much more time than I could possibly give it. The City of Goldendale is just starting on a period of growth and this, coupled with the problems presented by the John Day Dam and other construction work in the area, will mean that city matters will deserve more attention and justify more study than my schedule would permit. Accordingly, I have notified the City Clerk that I am declining the write-in nomination given me for mayor, and for councilman-at-large, and my name will not appear on the general election ballot. I wish it to be known that I would not accept these or any other city position on a write-in basis, and ask that you refrain from entering my name at the city general election. I deeply appreciate the confidence you expressed in me by your vote in the primary election. To you, and to those who initiated the write-in campaign, and worked in my behalf, I say "thank you."
