Parker, 49, and Mrs. Lottie Loomis, 75, mother of Mrs. Henry Holdren of Villisca. Mrs. Parker died at 7 a.m. Saturday and Mrs. Lomis at 3:15 p.m. Monday in St. Anthony’s hospital in Carroll, Iowa, from fatal injuries both received when their car crashed with that of a Cedar Rapids youth who was hurrying a companion to the bedside of his dying father in Ames. The two women were returning to their homes in Grant from Montour, Iowa, where ethyl had visited since Wednesday of last week in the home of Mrs. Loomis sister, Mrs. Jennie Murphy and had stopped at a filling station on the highway at Gidden. L. I. Nelson of Cedar Rapids was driving east on the highway at a high speed accompanied by a young man companion from Lincoln, Nebraska, whose father lay at the point of death in Ames. The Grant women, with Mrs. Parker at the wheel, drove from the service station on the south side of the highway into the road just as the speeding car approached. Station attendants who were eye witness to the tragedy declared that Mrs. Parker stopped the car before re-entering the highway but said that a large tree obstructed her view of the highway. It is thought that she failed to see the approaching Cedar Rapids car until she found herself directly in its path. The Cedar Rapids man attempted to check the speed of his car, but failed and crashed into the side of the Loomis car with terrific force. Both women were hurled from the car and the occupants of the other car were pinned beneath it when it overturned after the collision. The two women, fatally injured and unconscious were rushed to St. Anthony’s hospital in Carroll. Mrs. Parker’s injuries included a fractured skull, several crushed ribs, a broken collar bone, and concussion of the brain. Mrs. Loomis received a broken nose, crushed limb and internal injuries which caused her death. The two young men received serious injuries and were taken up to Carroll for treatment. One is still confined in the hospital there. Both will recover, doctors say. No charges were filed against the driver of the car which crashed into Mrs. Loomis Chevrolet car, as the accident was pronounced unavoidable by officials of the county in which it occurred. Both cars were demolished. The body of Mrs. Parker was brought from Carroll to Villisca Saturday morning in the Wolfe & Gourley ambulance and remained in the funeral parlors here until Sunday when it was taken to the home in Grant. Funeral services for Mrs. Parker were held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Methodist Church in Grant with Rev. E. S. Menoher of Mt. Ayr, Iowa, in charge of the rites and Rev. A. Breeling of Grant assisting. Short services were held at the home prior to those at the crush. Singing was by Mrs. Imogene Pogue at the home and by Misses Helen and Lois Blackburn at the church. Pall bearers were Dr. D. J. Chalmers, H. A. Workman, A. C. Stinemates, F. W. Kenworthy, John Hendrickson and Ed Bourick. Della B. Leonard was born May 25, 1932, three miles east of Grant and grew to womanhood in that vicinity. On March 14, 1906 she was married to Forrest A. Parker and with the exception of one year in Colorado, they spent their married life in Montgomery County and most to the time on a farm in the Grant vicinity. She is survived by her husband and by three brothers who are Frank A. Leonard of near Villisca, H. S. and C. E. Leonard of Grant vicinity and by two sisters, Mrs. C. M. Cooper of Oskkosh, and Mrs. L. M. Curry of Denver, Colorado. The funeral rites for Mrs. Lottie Loomis were conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Methodist Church at Grant with Rev. A. Breeling in charge with burial made in the Grant Cemetery. Nephews of Mrs. Loomis served as pall bearers. Lottie Foote, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Loren Foote, was born April 25, 1856 in Monmouth, Illinois and moved to this county with her parents when a young girls. She was married December 25, 1873 to Anson Loomis of Red Oak and to this union three daughters were born, all who survive their mother,. They are Mrs. Ross, Mrs. Ed Brown of Grant, and Mrs. Henry Holdren of Villisca. Mr. Loomis died in 1911 and Mrs. Loomis moved a year later from a former farm house in the vicinity. Besides her daughters she is survived by one brother, and two sisters. They are L. D. Foote of Grant, Mrs. Jennie Murphy of Montour, Iowa and Mrs. Galloway of Lincoln, Nebraska.
