He had been admitted to practice at the Boone county bar after completing a course at the State Agricultural college in Ames Iowa and in the Iowa State University, where he pursued his law course. He seemed to have a bright future ahead of him but his career was terminated in death. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This young man died February 19, at his father's home in Colfax Township, of Bright's disease. He has been a resident of this county since 1869. He was born in Massachusetts, but nearly all his life has been spent here. Anxious to enter a profession, he spent all his time in study. Becoming a student at the Agricultural College in 1883, he spent nearly two years in close application at that place. Ill health prevented his farther study there. After that he spent some time in Colorado seeking to regain his lost health. Upon his return home he was for a time deputy postmaster in Boonsboro, and relinquished that position to commence the study of the law. During 1885 and a part of 1886 he studied in the law office of Crooks & Jordan, and in September, 1886, entered the law department of the University at Iowa City. Here he applied himself too closely to the work before him, completing in one year the course prescribed for two years. Gradually the symptoms of the dread disease that brought him to a premature grave becoming alarming. Though in bed he passed all the examinations required and last June he was admitted to the bar of the supreme court. Thus had he reached the goal of his ambition. His determined will had carried him through but although the mind was strong and active, disease had already undermined his constitution. Since then he has lingered at his father's home, at times hopeful, at times despondent. His friends and relatives from the first realized that he could not recover, but exhibiting a mental power that would have brought him an enviable position in the profession he had chosen, he struggled with his trouble and hoped to the last that he would recover. He was a noble, honorable man, and his parents and relatives have the sincere sympathy of the community. The bar of this county, realizing his worth and manly qualities, on the 25th inst. unanimously adopted the following very appropriate resolutions: In the District Court of the State of Iowa, in and for Boone County. In the matter of the death of Dennis Menton, a member of the Boone County Bar. Whereas, Dennis Menton departed this life on the 19th day of February, A.D. 1888; and Whereas, He has been a resident of this county from early childhood, and obtained his early legal education in the law offices of Boone; and Whereas He was admitted to the bar of this state in June, 1887, though afflicted at the time with the disease which finally carried him from among us; therefore be it resolved; that we, the members of the Boone County Bar, recognize in the death of our brother, Dennis Menton, the premature loss of a fellow member of the profession of more than ordinary promise, of singularly pure life and motive, and high-minded ambition, and that we hereby testify our sense of personal loss in his death, recognizing the promise of his usefulness to the profession and to his fellow man.
