Johanna Leary, daughter of Daniel and Katherine Leary, was born in County Cork Ireland, May 15, 1836. At the age of nine months with her parents she crossed the Atlantic and settled for a time in Canada, but later came to the United States and settled in Boston, in and around which place she spent her early years and grew to young womanhood. On June 10, 1858, she was united in marriage with John Menton of North Easton, Massachusetts, a small town near Boston, where they continued to make their home for nine years; Father Menton having been employed for a number of years with the great Ames Shovel Works at that place. There four children were born, Julia, Dennis, Daniel and John. In the spring of 1867 Mr. Menton with his family, together with his sister, Mrs. Jane Carr and her family, left the old Bay State and journeyed toward the setting sun. They landed in Boone county, Iowa, and settled on a small farm southeast of Boone in Colfax township. When they left their old home in Massachusetts their friends there told them they were crazy for coming away out here in the western wilderness to be scalped or murdered and perhaps eaten by the savages that they believed peopled this region, but with true pioneer spirit they ignored all such warning and superstitious and bravely set forth to carve out for themselves and their children a home in the boundless west. At that time it was indeed a boundless and barren region, but in common with the other brave pioneers they labored and wrought well, soon acquired a good home and had the supreme pleasure to see what was then a barren waste of prairie and timber blossom like the rose into cultivated farms of a highly productive quality dotted over with happy, beautiful homes occupied by a contented, happy and prosperous people. In all this work of construction and up building none did a nobler or more effective work or enjoyed the love and esteem of a wider circle of friends then did Mrs. Menton. After coming to Boone county five more children, Katherine, Nellie, T.P., William F., and Edward J., were born to them. In 1888, Dennis, the oldest son, after completing a college course and being admitted to the practice of law, passed away at the farm home after a lingering illness with Bright’s disease, thus making the first break in the immediate family circle. In 1890 Mr. and Mrs. Menton decided to give up the active and strenuous work of farm life, so they turned the farm over to their children and removed to Boone, where they purchased a home and prepared to spend their declining years in peace and comfort. Here also they rapidly made a host of warm friends and they had in the country, to whom the latch strings of their home was always unfastened. In August; 1905, the husband and father passed away and now the wife has gone to join him in the better world. Mrs. Menton is survived by eight children. Mrs. Julia O’Connell of Boone, Daniel of Denver, Colorado; John A., one of the publishers of The Boone County Democrat, Mrs. Katherine Ivis of Jackson township, Nellie, who has been long her faithful nurse and attendant, T.P., and Edward J. of Boone and William F. of Santa Ana, California, all of whom were present during her last illness and funeral except the latter, who was unable to come, also two sisters, Ellen and Katherine Leary, of San Francisco, California, and eight grandchildren. She has always been a devoted member of the Catholic Church and lived a devout and intensified Christian life. Walking meekly in the footsteps of the Savior she loved and venerated, bringing good cheer and gladness, to the hearts of all about her. She was meekness and patience personified and no one ever knew her to utter a word of ill will or criticism to anyone. No one knew her but to love her and her devoted friends were numbered only by her acquaintances and if ever a saint went direct from this earth to the pearly gates of Heaven she was one. Mrs. Menton had not been in robust health for a number of years but no one ever heard a word of complaint from her. In February last she had a slight attack of pneumonia, this later settled into kidney and stomach trouble and finally into Bright’s disease and euremic poisoning, which finally reached her heart and caused her death. She died as she had lived, bravely and patiently, and seemed to be ecstatically looking forward to the reunion with her Savior and the loved ones who had gone before. May her soul rest in peace. The funeral services were held this Thursday morning at 9:00 o’clock from the Sacred Heart Church, attended by the family and a host of sorrowing friends. Many beautiful floral tributes attested the love and esteem of all. The services were conducted by the Rev. Father J.P. Barron, who celebrated the solemn requiem high mass and preached a most eloquent and touching sermon. Beautiful and appropriate music was rendered by the choir. Following this service the remains were taken to the Catholic cemetery, where they were tenderly laid to rest in the family lot beside those of her husband and son, who had preceded her. The pallbearers were Er C. Jordan, Matt Welsh, J.C. Judge, J.J. McKone, J.F. Ivis and Ed Mahoney.
