He was a 32d degree Mason, member of Anchor Lodge, Al Malaikal Temple, the Shrine Mounted Patrols, the Odd Fellows, Jonathan Club, Associated general Contractors, Rancheros Visitadores, Los Angeles petroleum Club and the Compton Chamber of Commerce. He was noted throughout the State for his hackney pony teams and the champion Belgian draft horses in his stables - Owl Stables. He also was a thoroughbred horse breeder and raced at major tracks. His to thoroughbred star Tecolotito won several times. He also had a large collection of rare birds from all over the world. Survived by his wife, Mary, a son, Joseph Burden, two grandchildren, four sisters and a brother. He married Leona Stockwell on Aug 8, 1919 Orange County, CA. They had 3 children: Betty Jean (1920-1921), Juanita Mae (1921-1955), Joseph. Juanita's funeral was in Compton on November 25, 1955 He married Mary Jane Hodges Ferrell on Dec 6, 1957.
