OBITUARY DEWEY VIRGIL SMITH Dewy Virgil Smith, son of John and Martha Phillips Smith was born on September 5, 1898 at Elwood, Nebraska, and died on Monday, March 23, 1970, at the Lexington Community Hospital, Lesxington, Nebraska, at the age of 71 years, 6 months and 18 days. On June 5, 1922, he was united in marriage to Miss Myrtle E. Steinbrink. To this union were born a daughter and a son. His wife, Mytle, died January 31, 1964. Dewey was a lifetime resident of Elwood and vicinity. He worked for the "Elwood Bulletin" newspaper for 30 years, and he was projectionist for the Elwood Theater for many years. Eh also worked for the Village of Elwood from 1948, until December 1, 1965, when he retired. Dewy was a member of the United Methodist Church, and a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge of Elwood. His membership was also in the Elwood Chamber of Commerce. He had a great interest in all community activities, especially sports events. He attended many of the South Platte Chamber of Commerce meeting in the area and he was a great booster for all civic projects. Dewey had a grat love for people and he njoyed visiting with those of all ages. He was a friend to everyone. On August 23, 1966, he was united in marriage to Miss Doris E. Bigelow. Dewey was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Myrtle; three brothers, Clarence, John, and Obert; and a sister Lillian. He is survived by his wife, Doris of Elwood; a daughter, Mrs. James J. (Maxine J.) Leggott of Elwood; a son, Gary R. Smith of Lincoln, Nebraska; four grandsons, Jim, Gregg, and Rick Leggott of Elwood, and Gary Christopher Smith of Lincoln; a granddaughter, Kimberly Ann Smith of Lincoln; many relatives, and a host of friends. Funeral services were held at the First United Methodist Church of Elwood on Wednesday, March 25, 1970, at 2 p.m., Rev. Charles A. Moorer, pastor, was in charge, assisted by Rev. J. Vernon Wheeler.
