Smith Myrtle Emaline Steinbrink, a daughter of Fred and Phoebe Steinbrink, was born on August 31, 1901, eight miles north of Elwood. Mytle attended Brace school through the 8th grade and was graduated from Elwood high school in 1920. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in the summer of 1960 from Kearney State College. For 25 years she had taught in various schools throughout the community, and for the past three years had been teaching in Dawson County. She was an actibe member of Delta Kappa Gamma professional teaching society. She was untied in marriage to Dewey Smith on June 5, 1922. This union was blessed with two children, Maxine Leggott of Elwood and Gary Smith of Claremont, California. She was an active member of the Elwood Christian church, being united with the church through baptism on March 14, 1926. Myrtle was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Emily. She is survived by her husband, children, three grandsons, Jim, Gregg, and Ricky Leggott, and one granddaughter, Kimberly Anne Smith; five brothers: Jim of Albany, Oregon, George of Loomis, Leo and Charles of Elwood, Earl of Compton, Calif.; five sisters, Mary Laughter of Alexandria, Va., Elda Wiley of Stapleton, Abbie Dreher, Alice Dreher and Velma Steinbrink of Hastings. Also many other relatives and friends. H. Dreher, Miss Velma Steinbrink, Hastings; Mr. and Mrs. George Steinbrink, Mrs. and Mrs. Eldo Steinbrink, Loomis; Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Packood, Arapahoe; Oliver Lewis, North Plate, Miss Caroly Steinbrink. NEBRASKA, THURDSAY, FEBRUARY 6, 1964 Crash at Lexington rail crossing takes life of Mrs. Dewey Smith Words cannot express the shock in this community Friday morning when word of a tragic accident was called in. Mrs. Dewewy Smith, 62, died instantly in a car-train crash at the Bridge street crossing in Lexington. Mrs. Smith was en route from her home in Elwood to her position as teacher in District 21 near Overton. Her car was in collison with a Union Pacific freight train at the crossing north of the sale barn location in Lexington. The accident occurred shortly after 7:00 o'clock Friday morning. Engineer of the east-bound freight tain said the warning lights were blinking and he first sighted the cr when the train was 200 to 300 feet west of the intersection. He said Mrs. Smith's attention was apparently concentrated on the approaching west-bound freight. The car, going north, slowed momentarily, the engineer said, but then she must have assumed she could cross the tracks before the west-bound frieght arrived at the crossing. Authorities believe Mrs. Smith never saw the east-bound freight which struck her car. She was thrown clear from the wreckage, but the car landed directly in the path of the west-bound freight and was carried four blocks west with pieces of wreckage being strewn along the way. Both of the trains ere through freights, the east-bound pulling 128 cars and the other 95 trains were delayed at Lexington about half an hour after the accident. Mrs. Smith was a life-long resident of this community, where she received her high school eduation. She had taught in many of Gosper County's rural school districts, and was known as an expecially good teacher, and a very competent person in any field of endeavor. She received her Bachelor degree from Kearney State College in 1960. Mrs. Smith was in her third year as teacher at District 21 in Dawson county, the Fairhaven school. Frequently, or when weather and roads were bad, she stayed at a farm home, near the school. However, with the open winter. she had been driving each day. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Christian church in Elwood, the Rev. Rob't Dally officating, assisted by Rev. Fred Roberts. The overflow attendance signified the high esteem of this lady in the community. Organ music was provided by Mrs. Merton Leggott. Casket bearers were Lawrence Hanson, M. R.
