Description	:	Dexter Gunderson Dexter H. Gunderson, Yankton, died at his home Wednesday, November 22, 1989, of complications of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s disease). Funeral services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Christ Church Episcopal with the Rev. Tom Hurley officiating. Visitation will be today (Friday) from 4-9 p.m. at Kostel Funeral Home, Yankton. There will be a Masonic service at 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial with military rites will be at Bluffview (Bluff View) Cemetery in Vermillion. He graduated from Irene Public Schools and attended South Dakota State University and the University of South Dakota where he graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in business. He served in the U.S. Naval Air Corp from 1943 to 1945. In 1951, he married Marian Boekelheide in Mansfield. They owned and operated an implement business, C.H. Gunderson and Son in Irene from 1946-72, and Dexter Gunderson, Inc., in Yankton from 1964-72. From 1957-70, Gunderson served in the South Dakota House of Representatives and during his last term, served as Speaker of the House. He ran for the U.S, Congress in 1970 and was defeated in the general election after winning a five-way primary. He was state director of the Federal Energy Administration from 1973-77. Mr. Gunderson was a vice president of American State Bank from 197-81, and was on the board of directors from 1968-80. He was also on the board of directors of the Farmer’s State Bank I Irene from 1955-79. In 1981, Gunderson was appointed state director for the Farmer’s Home Administration. He served until January 1989. He was a member of Christ Church Episcopal, the VFW, Hall-Thompson Post of the American legion and past commander, Disabled American Veterans, the Elks, Masonic Order, Scottish Rite Consistory El Riad Shrine, Rotary International, Farm Bureau, the American and South Dakota societies of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers, Yankton Chamber of Commerce, the South Dakota Bankers Association, the South Dakota division of the American Automobile Association, Delta Tau Delta and the South Dakota Foundation of the University of South Dakota. He is survived by his wife, Marian of Yankton; a son, John of Irene; a daughter, Mary Gunderson of St. Paul, Minn.; two grandchildren, two sisters, Marjorie Dierenfield, Santa Barbara, Calif., and Patricia Gunderson, Ventura, Calif.; a niece, Harriette Jump, who lived with the family for a time, Douglas, Ariz. Gunderson, died Wednesday of complications arising from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. He was 66. Gunderson had battled the disease, which is known as Lou Gehrig’s disease since leaving the FmHA in January. He had served as the group’s director since 1981. He also was a member of the South Dakota House of Representatives from 1957 to 1970, and was the speaker of the House during his final term. Gunderson ran for a seat in the U.S. Congress in 1970, but was defeated in the general election after winning a five-way primary. Born May 18, 1923, in Irene, Gunderson graduated from Irene Public Schools. He attended South Dakota State University and graduated from the University of South Dakota with a bachelor’s degree in business. He served in the U. S. Naval Air Corps from 1943-45. He is survived by his wife, Marian, and two children.
