Ritchie, 28, died of the results of drowning off the Island of Ceylon, near India, on November 25th, according to a telegram received by his wife, Mrs. Mary Chaney Ritchie. He attended Bruce High School until the eleventh grade, and then enlisted in the army. After he returned home he was employed for a year at the plant of the W.Va. Pulp and Paper Company. He was a member of the Church of the Brethren. Besides his wife, he leaves a two-year old son, Robert Dolan Ritchie, of Westernport; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. David C. Ritchie; two brothers, Wayne Ritchie, of Westernport; Corporal Shelby Ritchie of Lowry Field, Dayton, Ohio; and three sisters, Miss Edith Ritchie, R.N., and Misses Pansy and Phyllis, at home. “The Herald” (Piedmont, W.Va.), Thursday14 December 1944: Captain Dolan S. Up to this morning, no word had been received on the exact time of arrival here. A son of Mrs. Bessie Foltz, Captain Ritchie was the husband of Mary Chaney Ritchie, and the father of a son, Robert Ritchie. His father, David C. Ritchie died last February. Other survivors are two brothers and three sisters, Wayne and Shelby Ritchie, of Westernport, Misses Edith and Phyllis, at home, and Mrs. Arone DiUbaldo, Piedmont. Having served five years in the Regular Army during peace time, Captain Ritchie was called back to duty in February 1940. He was promoted to sergeant at Fort Monroe, Va., and sent to Officers Training school at Fort Benning, Georgia where he was commissioned a second lieutenant in July 1942. He was a member of the Church of the Brethren. “The Herald” (Piedmont, W.Va.), Thursday 27 May1948: The body of Captain Dolan Ritchie, who was accidentally drowned off the Island of Ceylon, India, November 25, 1944, while on duty with the army, will arrive tomorrow afternoon on the Western Maryland train at 4:36. The service will be held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 oclock at the Boal Funeral Home. The Rev. G. Stanley Schwind, rector of St. James Episcopal Church and the Rev. J. Emmert Dettra, pastor of the Church of the Brethren, will officiate. Interment will be in Philos Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by the honor guard of Victory Post, American Legion.
