Description	:	Donald C. Meirath, 94 of Grand Island, Nebraska died Wednesday, July 2, 2014 at Veterans Administrative Hospital in Grand Island, Nebraska. Services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 7, 2014 at Gollaher Chapel, Trinity United Methodist Church, Grand Island, with the Reverend Lonnie Logan and Reverend Dr. Theresa Mason officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Beatrice, Nebraska. Memorials are suggested to Salvation Army Christmas Fund and the Methodist church. Apfel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Donald C. Meirath was born August 31, 1919 at Plymouth, Nebraska the son of Otto and Cora (Megli) Meirath. He grew up in Plymouth on the family farm. He entered the United States Army on November 8, 1941 and served during World War II. Don served with the 36th Armored Infantry Regiment. Battles and campaigns included the D-Day invasion of Normandy, The Battle of the Bulge, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe. He received the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart with two bronze Oak Leaf Clusters, American Defense Service ribbon and Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged July 8, 1945 at rank of staff sergeant. He was united in marriage to Alleen Burris on August 19, 1945 at Hebron, Nebraska and was married for 61wonderful years. Alleen died in 2006. After the service Don and Alleen moved to Hebron where Don Worked at the Army Ammunitions Plant in Hastings. They then moved to Grand Island in 1950 where Don was the grounds engineer at Veterans Administrative Hospital. He retired from the V.A. Hospital after 32 years of service. Don was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church for 64 years. He was active in Methodist Men, Methodist Youth Fellowship, Camp Comeca, Boy Scouts, mission trips and Methodist mission churches. He was a member of VFW and American Legion Club. They were active members of National Campers and Hikers Association and Good Sams. They were awarded the Rio Grande Volunteers of the year in 1991 and the International Family Campers Humanitarian Service Award. Don and Alleen were known for their volunteering work and selfless giving throughout the community. In 1981 they moved half time to McCallen, Texas where their volunteering continued at tutoring local grade schools in Texas, serving with the American Red Cross disaster relief and bringing home military personnel for family emergencies. They were the organizers for Christmas drives for needy children and families in the Rio Grande Valley, being Mr. & Mrs. Santa Claus for thousands of children at local schools and youth clubs for over 25 years. Don also built mission churches in Mexico for over 20 years, hosting local volunteers in their home. He was known throughout the Rio Grande Valley for his caring and commitment to others. In 2006 he moved back to Grand Island full-time where he later moved to Primrose Assisted Living facility, which became his second family. In January 2013 he acquired a third family at the VA Hospital in Grand Island. Don & Alleen had the opportunity to travel extensively and Don was fond of saying he was blessed enough to be retired as long as he had worked. He loved, gardening, camping, spending time with family, cooking with Alleen, the love of learning, current events, sports and reading. Don was a constant source of optimism to himself and others. Don was loved by all who met him. He was always positive, appreciative, humble and a role model to all. Don was a grower of flowers and people. Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Donna & Mike Moriarty of Blue Ridge, Georgia, Dee & Steve French of Doniphan, NE. and Debra & Chuck Norman of Kearney. NE. Additional survivors include grandchildren, Brent, David Moriarty and Megan Moriarty, Heather French Rewolinski, Amber French, Scott, Alexis Babbitt Pennington, and Caitlin Babbitt Smith, 14 great grandchildren – the loves of his life. They included, Kayla, Tressa, Jordon, Emma, Tyson, Nick, Charlie, Simon, Kate, Holt, Holly. Heidi, Bechett, Crew and one on the way. Don was preceded in death by his parents, Otto and Cora Meirath, his wife Alleen, three brothers, Reford Meirath, Marvin Meirath, and Wayne Meirath, and two sisters, Opal Whiteside and Annie Meirath.
