Two hours after he had been missed from home, Wednesday afternoon and following a third search downstream, the body of Donald Hale, seven-year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Goodrich, of Ormas, was found caught in a bush at the side of the dredged ditch leading from Smalley Lake to Big Lake. The child's body had been carried one and one-half miles west of the place where it is known he entered the water to wade. Discovery of the lifeless body was made by the father and Adam Hill, at about four o'clock. The parents of the lad resided until a month ago on the Earl Wise farm, near Old Lake. They moved to Ormas, where Mr. Goodrich started a general store, and the Goodrich family resided in the dwelling joining the store. Donald Hale was last seen about the home at about 1:30 Wednesday afternoon. His absence at 2 o'clock caused concern to his father, who began a search for him. The child had been accustomed last summer to going in wading daily. Mindful of this fact, Mr. Goodrich went to the ditch, 200 feet north of his store. A few feet east of the bridge, he saw his son's shoes and stocking, lying on the bank. His calls to the missing boy were not answered. Fearing for the worst, Mr. Goodrich secured neighbors to assist him, and a general search was begun. Failing to find the body in the ditch under or about the bridge, Mr. Goodrich and others made a careful search for a half-mile downsteam, or west of the bridge. Later the search was extended some distance further, but it was not until Mr. Goodrich and Mr. Hill had gone two miles down the creek and returned east a half-mile that they found the lifeless form of the boy. In all probability the lad had gone in wading at the bridge, and was swept into deep water by the current. The water in the ditch is from 18 inches deep at the sides to over four feet deep in the center, the ditch being swollen with water, and having a rapid current at this time of year. The body had been washed by the current against a bush, which held it, in abut two feet of water. Death had occurred long before discovery of the body, which had been in the water at least two hours. Surviving the lad are the parents; four sisters, Irene, Ellen, Lowillo and Jean, the latter being only five days of age; one brother, Phil. Mr. and Mrs. William Adair, of Ormas, are grandparents, as were the late Mr. and Mrs. Silas Goodrich, of Whitley county. The deceased child was a nephew of Roy Goodrich, east of this city, and of Mrs. William Keirn, of Columbia City. Since the drowning occurred just across the Whitley county line, in Noble county, Coroner Shaw, of Kendallville, conducted the inquest, which was completed at the Goodrich home Thursday. The funeral will be at the home at 9 o'clock Saturday morning, with Rev. Hults of Etna officiating. Burial will be in the Thorncreek cemetery.
