Lurz, age 70, passed away June 24, 2011 at the VA Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota with complications from cancer. Don was born in Valentine NE to Eustach and Inez (Brown) Lurz on March 28, 1941. He was one of eleven children and enjoyed life with his siblings on the family farm north of Valentine. In 1961 he married Donna Bush and joined the US Army. He was stationed in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and completed his high school education while in the service. He was proud to be a part of building the schools in Thailand (where he learned to hate rice). After his tour of duty they returned to Valentine to work on the Bush ranch. The family moved back to town and within a few years he started his own business, Don’s Plumbing and Heating. In 1976 he continued his career with a move to Hastings, NE. Missing being self employed he moved to Osmond, NE to resume his trade. He was a contractor with HUD housing to make houses more energy efficient. This took him to North Platte, NE until 2001. After the lost of his wife Donna in 2000 he was lucky to meet another love of his life, Judy Christensen, who he married in 2006. Don and Judy enjoyed the hunters and the coffee crowd at Pro Bait and Tackle in Presho, SD. Reconnecting with his love of farming, Don bought a John Deere tractor and helped people with snow removal, tilling gardens, and mowing hay with his very special friend, Ray Anderson. In March, sick with pneumonia, Don was still seen early in the morning on that John Deere removing snow. Don’s greatest joy in life was spending time with family and friends. With each town he resided he found a coffee and card playing group where he could enjoy laughter and story telling. Survivors include his wife Judy, son John of Norfolk, NE, daughter Linda and husband Steve of Norfolk, son Donald Laverne and wife Wanda (Ginter) of Hastings, son Mike and wife Tara of 29 Palms, CA, 3 step-children, Brent Christensen of Sioux Falls, SD, Rebecca Christensen of Waverly, NE and Leslie Ross of Cottage Grove, MN, 9 grandchildren, 9 brothers and sisters, and all of his beloved friends that meant so much to him. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and one grandchild.
