Shimon, 20, volunteered for service in February 1943 and was inducted into the army at Camp Dodge on Feb. 17, 1943. He was sent to North Camp Polk, La., where he had since been stationed. Sgt. Shimon was graduated from the Gilmore City high school in 1941 and after graduation was employed for a time in Des Moines by the Iowa Highway Commission and at the time of his induction was employed by the Des Moines Drug Co. He is survived by his parents and one brother, Cpl. Bernard Shimon, now stationed at Oahu, Hawaii. Shimon, was taken from ‘The Natural’ a weekly paper published by the 7th Armored Infantry Battalion of Camp Polk, La., where he was killed in a tank accident on Sept. 4. “In Memoriam of Sgt. Donald L. Shimon” “We of the 7th take this space to pay tribute to one of us who has given his life for his country, Sgt. Donald L. Shimon. Donald was born Aug. 29, 1924, in Gilmore City, Iowa. He lived in his birthplace until he joined us in 1943. In civilian life, as well as army life, our friend always excelled in everything he attempted, being captain of his high school football team. The big thing we want to remember about Sgt. Shimon is that he was one of us, typical of our idea of an ideal doughboy. We like to think of ourselves being the best, Don was one of our best upholders of this tradition. Life will go its mad rush, but stop occasionally and think of this friend of ours who although he missed his chance at the ribbons and medals and never got his chance to kill that German or Jap he wanted to; his sacrifice was just as great as any of the other heroes, in that he gave his life and upon that sacrifice and more like it, a better world will be built.
