Born May 7, 1923, at Dillon, Kan., Doris was the daughter of Charles F. Rumold and Cleo M. (Lockard) Rumold. She attended school at Dillon and graduated from Hope High School. Born May 7, 1923, at Dillon, Kan., Doris was the daughter of Charles F. Rumold and Cleo M. (Lockard) Rumold. She attended school at Dillon and graduated from Hope High School. On August 31, 1941, she married Verden W. Long. They farmed near Ramona and Hope. Among other farm work Doris contributed by raising chickens, milking cows, cooking for hired help, and taking meals to the field during wheat harvest.Doris was also active outside the home. At Hope United Methodist Church she taught Sunday School for 25 years, served as president and secretary of the United Methodist Women group, sang in the choir and women’s trio, and provided altar flowers. She also volunteered as a 4-H leader for the Mount Ayr Go-Getters and served as president and secretary of her local Extension Homemaker Unit (EHU). An avid crafter, Doris pieced many quilts for her family and made countless wall-hangings, potholders, aprons, and afghans. Doris also loved flowers, tended a big garden, and collected many varieties of roses and other perennials. Doris devoted much of her retirement to care of her husband. In 2011, Doris moved to Wisconsin to live near her daughter Letha. While there, Doris followed the Green Bay Packers with great enthusiasm, cheered the Kansas City Royals from afar, and enjoyed spending time with many of her great-grandchildren.Doris was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Wayne; her husband; and their son, Dwight. She is survived by her daughter Letha Kraus and her husband, Dennis, of Appleton, Wis.; daughter Lois Lind and her husband, Lyle, of Tilden, Neb.; former daughter-in-law Linda Dyck of Tampa, Kan.; grandson Charles Kraus and his wife, Shannon, of Neenah, Wis.; grandson Dean Kraus and his wife, Julie, of Richfield, Minn.; granddaughter Colene Lind and her husband, Rex Fowles, of Manhattan, Kan.; grandson Alan Lind and his wife, Jami, of Tilden, Neb., grandson Ross Lind of Tilden, Neb.; grandson Justin Dyck and wife, Gail, of Hillsboro, Kan.; granddaughter Stacy (Dyck) Baker and her husband, Kris, of Bonner Springs, Kan.; and twelve great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Doris will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 20, 2015, at the Hope United Methodist Church in Hope with Pastor Don Alt officiating. Her final resting place will be in the Ashton Cemetery near Hope. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8 Wednesday evening at the funeral home. Memorial gifts honoring Doris may be given to Hope United Methodist Church and may be sent in care of the Carlson-Becker Funeral Home, P.O. 355, Hope, Kansas, 67451.
