She simply fell peacefully asleep one last time, much to the comfort of all who loved her. She was ninety-four years old. Doris was born on May 21, 1921 in Chico, California, the fifth of six children of Elmer W. Peacher and Clara Spencer Peacher. She grew up attending Chico Schools and graduated from Chico High in 19__. Shortly afterward she met the very handsome Jack Lucas at a dance in what had once been the old J.C. Penney building in Chico. They courted and then married on October 30, 1940. Their first son William—nick-named “Skip” by the nurse at the hospital—was born while they lived in a home on Esquon Road in Durham, and Ray followed two years later. The brothers were affectionately known as Skip and Butch during their growing-up years. In 1961 Jack and Doris moved their family to 9785 MacAnarlin Avenue in Durham, where the couple remained until Jack passed away in 2006. Doris continued to live there, joined for several years by her son Skip, until about three years ago—when she called Ray to inform him that she was moving to Roses and Ivy Eldercare in Chico. Doris had many friends and was an active volunteer in Durham for more than fifty years. In 1998 she was honored as Woman of the Year, reflecting the community’s great appreciation for her service. She was an active member of the Durham Women’s Club, and she and Jack were charter members of the Durham “Good Sams,” enjoying many a trailer trip with their friends over the years. She was a member of Durham Community Baptist Church. Career-wise, Doris worked as a receptionist for KHSL television, and later as secretary at the “new” Durham Elementary School. Doris was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who will be cherished and deeply missed by family and friends. She is survived by her son Skip Lucas, of Chico; Ray and Sue Lucas of Durham; grandchildren Jennifer Gibbs and husband Eric of Vineyard, Utah; Loretta Miller of Sacramento; Larry Lucas of Merced; and Scott Lucas and his wife Stacey of San Tan Valley, Az. Doris had seven great-grandchildren: Sierra, Hailey, Seth, and Zachary Gibbs; Dustin and Marissa Miller; Caitlin Lucas, and Ethan and McKenzie Lucas. Doris is also survived by Jack’s beloved step-sister and her husband, Dan and Rosalind McNair. Doris’ family would like to express special thanks to Brian, Cindy, and all the staff of Roses and Ivy for their extraordinary loving care, and for making Doris feel truly like family while she was there. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, March 29, at Glen Oaks Cemetery (Midway & Hegan Lane) at 11 a.m., with a viewing at Newton-Bracewell Funeral Home, Chico, on Monday the 28th, from 6 to 8 p.m.
