Description	:	Dorothy Magdelene Eakin Brooks Dorothy was born in Indiana May 12, 1914 to Margaret and John Eakin. Margaret was of German ancestry (Katzenberger) and spoke both German and English with a slight accent. John was a product of two of the most prominent families in Virginia (Eakin-Caldwell). Dorothy or "Dottie" as she was born grew up with her older sister Ruth on North Gale Street in Indianapolis, Indiana. Her blonde hair grew dark and she had bright blue eyes. Read More	Dorothy Magdelene Eakin Brooks Dorothy was born in Indiana May 12, 1914 to Margaret and John Eakin. Margaret was of German ancestry (Katzenberger) and spoke both German and English with a slight accent. John was a product of two of the most prominent families in Virginia (Eakin-Caldwell). Dorothy or "Dottie" as she was born grew up with her older sister Ruth on North Gale Street in Indianapolis, Indiana. Her blonde hair grew dark and she had bright blue eyes. She loved dolls and music, especially the piano. She played piano by ear while both her mother and sister were piano teachers. Her father worked for General Motors (later retiring as a Supervisor after 50 years). Dorothy graduated high school at 16 years old and went on to typing school where she became a stenographer. When she was about 20 years old she met a young artist named Bill Justice, born in Ohio but whom also grew up in Indiana. After he finished school at the John Herron Institute of art he was hired by a young ambitious animator by the name of Walt Disney to work at his newly founded studio in Burbank, California. In 1936 Mr. Justice and Ms. Eakin journeyed out west, marrying and settling in California. Their best friends Nadine and Al Stetter (also a new animator) also had come from the Midwest and lived close by. During the war while Walt Disney strived to produce cartoons to support the servicemen, Dorothy and Nadine joined the Red Cross to do their part. Dorothy was a semi professional tennis player and partnered with the likes of Oleg Cassini (at that time married to Actress Gene Tierney), Jimmy Dodd (of Disney later Mouseketeers), Jim Brown (Actor) and others. Dottie and Bill amidst the Hollywood Scene partied at Edward G. Robinsons house, James Cagney's and Ernest Borgnine's In 1946, after 10 years of marriage and no children, the Justice's divorced. Shortly thereafter Dorothy became interested in the mailman, and with Nadine' s encouragement of course. Alva Brooks was also interested in Dorothy and asked Nadine about her to which she promptly replied, "Didn't you know she and Mr. Justice divorced and maybe you should ask her out". So Dorothy married the Postman. Dorothy and Alva (Brooksie as he was known) married in Glendale, California April 7th, 1947. They built a house at 7858 North Vineland Avenue in Sun Valley and awaited the arrival of their first child Sandra born July 4, 1948. Carol, their second child was born on May 18, 1952. Alva liked to do things with his hands, part Indian he made hunting bows and loved archery. He later worked with leather crafts and anything to do with woodwork and during his lifetime collected over 500 pipes and several guns. He had a 1952 Chevy which he never bought anything but a Chevy. Dorothy played the piano and liked to sketch. The Brooks family moved to 609 Rosemary Lane in Burbank, California in 1954. There Dorothy continued to be a homemaker while Alva continued with the Burbank Post Office retiring in 1959 after 40 years. Alva was a professional Gardner thereafter with his own business and a Burbank Reserve Deputy for the Burbank Police Department until he was struck with Parkinson's disease shortly thereafter. When Alva could not work any longer Dorothy went back into the workforce. In 1960 she worked as an enumerator for the United States Census Bureau in Burbank, California. In 1961 she became employed by Strato Engineering, an engineering aircraft company which took pride in their development of the Pregnant Guppy cargo aircraft. Alva passed away in 1963 and Dorothy with her daughters moved to 2608 West Clark Street two blocks away from her friends Nadine and Al. In 1971 her first grandson John was born and a few years later Marco. She adored both boys and after retiring lived with her daughter Carol and grandson Marco. In 1980 the first granddaughter, Elizabeth was born and she cared daily for the little girl whom she called "Betsy". She was devoted to her grandchildren until her death in 1981 from colon cancer.
