Petersen was born on Feb. 27, 1921, in Geneva to Robert R. and Bell Pearl Bakeman Thomas. She was one of eight children in the family. She passed away at the Fillmore County Hospital in Geneva on Oct. 17, 2000, at the age of 79 years, 7 months and 18 days. Dorothy was married to Theodore V. Petersen on May 4, 1941, and they were blessed with two children, Richard and Virginia. During her years on the farm, Dorothy kept busy raising her children, in addition to all the chores of a farm wife. She often shared stories about gathering eggs and canning vegetables from her garden, proudly stating that one year she canned 200 quarts of corn and 200 quarts of green beans. She enjoyed many different crafts and gladly shared her expertise and knowledge, even giving a few lessons out of her home on the farm. She had a gift for painting and spent many hours on delicate chine painting projects and oil paintings she displayed in her home and shared with her family. She also had a talent for crocheting and made numerous Afghans with her own original designs. It was truly a gift, the ability she had to take a skein of yarn and turn it into something beautiful. She was employed at Heritage of Geneva for eight years as the Activities Director. She truly enjoyed her work there, giving freely of her time and becoming a true champion for the residents. She was an active member of the Rebekah Lodge for over 50 years, as well as a member of the Grange. Throughout her life Dorothy enjoyed many special friendships, which she cherished. In the past few years she was blessed with several close friends, whose companionship and help were also something she treasured. By her example she taught her family to make the most of everything you have, and had a knack for finding a way to recycle just about anything. She loved her family and displayed many family photos throughout her home, always sharing her “brag photos” as well as the refrigerator artwork by her grandkids and great-grandkids. She kept her family close to her heart and often told them that she loved them “piles to the sky.” She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Bell; husband, Theodore; brothers, Charles and Harold; and by sisters, Anna Edna, Ferne, Daisy and Mae. She is survived by her son, Richard Petersen; daughter, Virginia and husband, Tom Watters; grandsons, Tom Watters and wife, Gina; Seth Petersen and fiancée Melanie Theye; granddaughters, Leigh (Petersen) Varner and family; Kristi (Petersen) Kennel and family; and Kimberly Moore and family; five great-grandchildren; and by those whom she called “my friend.” Funeral services were conducted at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, from the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Geneva with Rev. Jay Mitchell officiating. Nancy Cradduck provided organ music for the services. Musical selections were “Abide With Me” and “Beyond the Sunset.” Casket bearers were Seth Petersen, Dave Varner, Tom Watters, Harold Moravec, Jim R. Nichols and Ron Sanders.
