She was born on March 11, 1915 in Farmer Township, Defiance County, Ohio the daughter of Harry W. and Lily F. (Van Horn) Blair. Read More	Dorothy Wanda Rowan, 94, of Hicksville died on Wednesday June 10, 2009 at Community Hospital and Wellness Center in Bryan, Ohio. She was born on March 11, 1915 in Farmer Township, Defiance County, Ohio the daughter of Harry W. and Lily F. (Van Horn) Blair. She grew up on a farm near Farmer, Ohio attending a one-room country school for (8) years and graduating from Farmer High School in 1933. Her principal urged her to go to college to become a teacher. She earned a Bachelor’s in Education in 1935 from Bowling Green State University; a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1974 from Indiana University and a Master of Science in Education in 1977 from Indiana University. She taught for three years at country schools in Milford Township and two years in the 2nd grade and 4th grade at Farmer Elementary School until she married in 1940. She married Robert Rowan on August 5, 1940. They owned Rowan Coal Company in Hicksville for over (30) years. He died in 1971 after (31) years of marriage. They moved to Hicksville in 1948 where she taught 2nd and 3rd grade at Hicksville Elementary and from 1959 – 1981 she taught Kindergarten at Hicksville Elementary retiring in 1981 after (31) years of teaching. For (27) years during the summer she was a volunteer teacher at the log school house at Sauder Village, Archbold, Ohio. She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, Hicksville; Hicksville Happy Hatters Red Hat Club; La Fleur de Terre Garden Club; Order of Eastern Star #248 in Bryan; Ohio State Retired Teachers Association; Defiance AAUW and the Bowling Green State University Alumni Association. She loved traveling which began right after college and included all 50 states and many countries. She is survived by her children: Janet (George) Kadesch – Lambertville, Michigan; Robert (Jackie) – Auburn, Indiana; David (Laura) – University Heights, Ohio and Dr. Stanley (Carol) – Bryan, Ohio; grandchildren Gregory (Cynthia) Kadesch – Haslet, TX; Paul Kadesch – Waterford, MI; Lisa (Jonathan) Barth – Auburn, IN; Jodi (Jeff) Gibson – Corunna, IN; Bobbi (David) Kurtz – Auburn, IN; Lindsay Rowan – Arlington, VA; Christine (Casey) Spitnale – Dayton, OH; Kim Rowan – Bentonville, AR; Matthew Rowan – Bryan, OH; great-grandchildren: Justin, Ashton, Tiffany and Kyle Kadesch; Jackson, Madison, and Taylor Barth; Rowan and Avery Kurtz. She was preceded in death by her husband; grandson Kenton Kadesch; two sisters Eunice Elser and Mona Rowan; a brother Ray Blair. Funeral services will be on Saturday at 10:00 at Smith & Brown Funeral Home – Hicksville, Ohio with Rev. Tom Graves officiating. Visitation will be on Friday from 2:00 – 8:00 with an Eastern Star service at 7:00. Burial will be at Six Corners Cemetery – Hicksville. Memorials may be given to Trinity United Methodist Church or Donor’s Choice.
