Monday, September 22, 2014 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, SD with Rev. Hans Sacrison officiating. Burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery, Clear Lake. Douglas Albert Toben was born March 2, 1931 on the family farm near Burr, Minnesota to Albert and Augusta (Ochsendorf) Toben. As a child, the family moved to Deuel County, SD where he was raised and attended country school. Following his education, Doug worked on the farm. Doug was united in marriage to Vivian Elaine Herreid in Watertown, SD on November 21, 1949. Following their marriage, they moved to the farm north of Clear Lake, SD where they raised their family. Doug farmed with his wife Vivian by his side. They raised a loving and caring family. Their grandchildren enjoyed visiting the farm along with helping with the chores that come with farm life. Doug retired from farming in 1990 when they moved into Clear Lake. Although he was retired, Doug enjoyed to help his sons with their farming. Doug entered the Deuel County Good Samaritan Center in December of 2013. On January 15, 2014 Vivian passed away. Doug and Vivian would have celebrated 65 years of marriage in November. Doug passed away on Friday, September 19, 2014 in the Sanford Clear Lake Medical Center at the age of 83 years, 6 months and 17 days. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Doug served on the Township, ASCS and FmHA Boards. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, hunting and traveling. Doug also enjoyed going to the casinos, playing cards and refinishing pictures. He especially enjoyed going to his grandchildren’s sporting events. Doug is lovingly remembered by two sons: Greg (Darla) Toben and Clark (Cindy) Toben, all of Clear Lake, SD; three daughters: Kathy Rahlf, Brenda Toben and Joy (Dennis) Prehn, all of Clear Lake, SD; 11 grandchildren: Amy Paulos, Todd (Roxi) Rahlf, Jessica Rehder, Jason E. (Rebecca) Toben, Ross Toben, Jenny (Jason) Kerkvliet, Tracy (James) Zahnow, Jason D. Toben, Heather Eide, Taylor (Chelsea) Toben and Zachary Toben; 15 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild; two sisters: Delores Devorak and LuRetta (Jim) Huber, all of Canby, MN and many nieces and nephews. Doug was preceded in death by his parents; wife Vivian; son Daniel; son-in-law Larry Rahlf, grandson Troy Douglas Rahlf; granddaughter Amber Joy Prehn and two brothers: Robert and Ronald Toben.
