Description	:	Douglas Smalley, 84, went to be with our Lord Jesus on July 17, 2007. He was born August 16, 1922, to Douglas Smalley Sr. and Leona Coleman in Baytown, TX. As an infant, his parents moved the family to Oswego, KS, where he grew up and attended school. Doug graduated from Oswego High School in 1940. Doug moved to Milwaukee, WI and enlisted in the Army. Doug reentered the... Read More	Douglas Smalley, 84, went to be with our Lord Jesus on July 17, 2007. He was born August 16, 1922, to Douglas Smalley Sr. and Leona Coleman in Baytown, TX. As an infant, his parents moved the family to Oswego, KS, where he grew up and attended school. Doug graduated from Oswego High School in 1940. Doug moved to Milwaukee, WI and enlisted in the Army. While in Wisconsin, he met and married Delores Schwartz. They had three daughters and one son. Active tour of duty took him to Central Europe. He received an Honorable Discharge in 1945. Doug reentered the Army in 1948 until 1949. His last assignment was chief clerk for Post Sergeant Major. His favorite post was in Paris, France as a courier. He decoded cryptograms and repaired radios. Doug and his family moved to Seattle and he managed Sanders Restaurant for 20 years. He eventually moved to Roseburg, OR and was managing two stores when his wife died in 1973. He remained in Oregon, near his son until 1975. In 1975, he came to Wenatchee and met and married Dorothy Wallace (with this union, Doug gained two more grown daughters). Doug and Dorothy made their home in Wenatchee and became foster parents. They adopted a baby girl in 1981, and a thirteen year old girl in 1997. Within the 30 years of foster parenting, they took care of numerous children. Doug worked as hardware manager at K-Mart. Alongside Dorothy, they managed a cafe at Pangborn Memorial Airport, managed a snack bar at Chelan County Courthouse, managed the KFC in Othello for a short time, opened Dee's Gift Shop in East Wenatchee and Christi's at Valley North Mall. Doug's last two jobs were courtesy clerk for Buttreys (now the Food Pavilion) and then Albertsons. The last four years of his life, Doug struggled with cancer. His family and friends will surely miss his love, wisdom, laughter and witty humor. He was an AWESOME husband, dad and grandpa. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Smalley of Wenatchee; daughters, Judi (Dave) Ramsey of Whidbey Island, Cathy (Johann) Theiss, Vicki Fechner and Christi (Jon) Smarro, all of Wenatchee, Joy (Don) Dunagan and Patty (Justin) Johnson, both of East Wenatchee and Debbie Hutching of Bothell; his brother, Ray Smalley; and his sister, Mable Smalley; 17 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; his son, Douglas Smalley, Jr.; and his grandson, Rick Spross-Ramsey. A Celebration of Doug's Life Service will be held on Saturday, July 28, 2007, at 11:30 a.m. at the Wenatchee Community Center (formerly the old Catholic Church) at 504 So.
