In the 1841 England Census Anthony and Elizabeth Smith and their sons George (age 2) and Edwin (age 6 months) are shown as residing in Wellingborough civil parish, in Northamptonshire. Anthony is listed as a watch maker. The Smith family came to America in 1847 coming directly to Fort Madison, Iowa. According to the obituary of his son, Edwin, the dental and jewelry office of Anthony Smith on Elm Street marked one of the first business institutions of the town. The obituary of his son, George, stated Dr. Anthony Smith was the first practicing dentist in Fort Madison, and probably in Iowa. Hope Episcopal Church was organized in Fort Madison March 25, 1854, and Anthony Smith was one of the first vestrymen. Anthony died October 4, 1859. His death is recorded in the 1860 Lee County mortality schedule of the Census. His cause of death was consumption, and the length of illness was three months. According to the 1850 and 1860 Lee County census schedules, the children of Anthony and Elizabeth Smith, in age order, were: George, John, Edwin, Frederick, Georgeanna, William, Charles A., Albert R., and Frank R.
