Description	:	Dr. Blair Arthur Stevens passed away Monday, June 17, 2013. He was born in Long Prairie Minnesota to Will and Pearl Stevens on July 20, 1915. He and his family moved to Manson WA when he was about seven and then to Chelan at thirteen where he later attended Chelan High School. He was the half-back on the Chelan football team that registered the historic, first victory over Wenatchee High School. Read More	Dr. Blair Arthur Stevens passed away Monday, June 17, 2013. He was born in Long Prairie Minnesota to Will and Pearl Stevens on July 20, 1915. He and his family moved to Manson WA when he was about seven and then to Chelan at thirteen where he later attended Chelan High School. He was the half-back on the Chelan football team that registered the historic, first victory over Wenatchee High School. His teammates nicknamed him "Lefty", a trait he passed on to many of his Grandchildren. He also lettered in basketball and track and was the Senior Class President. After high school he drove wood truck for a year to be able to afford to enroll in the Washington State College (WSC now WSU) School of Veterinary Medicine from which he graduated in 1938. During his time at WSC, he joined the TKE fraternity and the ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corp). Additionally, he married WSC co-ed and high school sweetheart, Maxine Tuttle on Friday, November 13th. After graduation, they established a Veterinary practice in The Dalles, Oregon which they ran until Blair was called to serve as a Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps during World War II and was stationed in Alaska where he provided food inspection and treated the sled and guard dogs. At the end of the War he returned to his Veterinary practice in The Dalles until 1948 when he and his family moved to Sunnyside to partner with Dr. Mike Mulqueeney. Health reasons caused him to quit his Veterinary practice in 1963 to work as an inspector for the Federal Department of Agriculture. He was a member of the Washington State Veterinary Association, American Legion Post #0073, Lower Valley Country Club, Lower Valley Elks Club, a Charter member of the Lions Club and an active member and supporter of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. He continued his military participation in the Army Reserves until he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. Besides sports, he enjoyed hunting birds in the local area, trips to the Oregon Coast and fishing with Maxine at Curlew Lake. They celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary on November 13, 2011. Blair was a stalwart champion of Maxine, and dedicated to his three sons and their families. He was a man of few words, but a quiet leader to his family and friends and those whose lives he touched. He lived by example instead of promises and his steadfast profile of honesty and loyalty has become a family benchmark – one he consistently placed before his own comfort and financial benefit. He is survived by his three sons, Robert (Betty Schiller) of Arlington, Richard (Beth Chambers) of Chandler AZ, Dr. James (Rosalie McMinimee) of Sunnyside; Grandchildren Michael (Sally), Cheri Simmons (Rick), Jennifer Stevens, Julie Tilson (Todd), Kristin Koskinen (Dr. Sean) and Aaron (Lori Miller); Great-grandchildren Whitney (Carpenter), Andrew Baker, Jared Tilson, Kayla Tilson, William Koskinen, John Koskinen, Catherine Koskinen, James Koskinen, Caroline Koskinen and Jessup Stevens. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, June 22, 2013 at the Smith Funeral Home in Sunnyside. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to be made to the Episcopal Church Women (ECW) of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 327 East Edison Ave., Sunnyside, WA 98944.
