Dr. Commodore Perry Coulson was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jabez Coulson, born in Poweshiek county, near Brooklyn, Ia, September 4, 1860 and passed away at his home in Chelsea, Iowa, Aug. 15, 1919, aged 58 years, l1 months, and 11 days. Dr. Commodore Perry Coulson was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jabez Coulson, born in Poweshiek county, near Brooklyn, Ia, September 4, 1860 and passed away at his home in Chelsea, Iowa, Aug. 15, 1919, aged 58 years, l1 months, and 11 days. Dr. Coulson was reared on the home farm and received part of his education in the country schools. Then one year's schooling at the academy at LeGrand, Iowa, and in 1885 he began the study of medicine at the University of Iowa at Iowa City which he attended one year and then turning his attention to the carpenter trade, he remained out of school one year, and then re-entered the State University from which he was graduated with the degree of M.D. March 6, 1889, locating immediately in Chelsea, Ia. The doctor met with such encouraging success from the first that he continued in practice there till his death and was known as one of the leading physicians of this section of the state. He practiced in the community of Chelsea for thirty years. For the last two years he had retired from active service because of poor health, but would go out in the case of emergency. Dr. Coulson was married February 18, 1884 to Miss Alida F. Showalter, in Poweshiek county. They moved to Chelsea March 14, 1889. The doctor and Mrs. Coulson have no children but raised one boy, Ralph O. Showalter, whom they hold as their son. Public spirited and active in local affairs, the doctor has never shirked the responsibilities of office. He served one term as mayor of Chelsea and also as member of the school board for three terms. He was a member of the county and state medical societies, and was a member in good standing of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons which he esteemed very highly and always worked for the good of the order. He has left to mourn his loss a be-____________Coulson of Tama, Iowa, a number of relatives and a host of friends. He has helped others but himself he could not help.
