At one time, Saluda was dubbed the “unofficial baby capital of the South.” Two institutions started in 1914--the Infants’ and Children’s Sanitarium for paying families and the Spartanburg Baby Hospital, a charitable organization--kept the town well-known in the medical field with new techniques that lowered the infant mortality rate and educated mothers. Out of these two institutions grew the Southern Pediatric Seminar, which opened in 1921 and drew instructors from around the country to lead courses in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of childhood diseases. Smith was the motivating force behind all three institutions. . . . The seminar, held every summer from 1921 to 1959 on the sanitarium grounds, was Smith’s answer to what he saw as a deficiency in pediatric training among physicians. . . ."
