Wooton at the Masonic Sanitarium, Bettendorf Iowa, on Thursday afternoon, Jun 26, 1953, brought a sense of loss and sorrow to his many friends in Akron vicinity, where he had resided for more than fifty years. He attained the age of 81 years, 2 months and 1 day. George Herbert Wooton, son of James and Elizabeth Johnston Wooton, was born in Hastings, Michigan April 24, 1872. He grew to young manhood there and graduated from Hastings high school in 1889. After clerking in a general store then for a time, he enrolled as a student in the University at Valparaiso, Indiana, and graduated from the commercial department there in 1893. He then entered the dental department of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and graduated with the Class of 1896. Deciding to locate for practice in the west he came to Vermillion, S.D., and entered into partnership with Dr. G. W Collins, who previously had graduated from Michigan U. After about two years this partnership was dissolved to enable Dr. Wooton to engage in business for himself, locating in Akron, which was then without a resident dentist. He continued to practice his profession here until failing health caused his retirement in 1936. On September 12, 1899, he was united in marriage with Miss Anna Idell Christy, a member of a pioneer Akron family. This union was blessed with one daughter, Idelline. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and his wife; who died on March 11, 1922. Dr. Wooton always-took: an active interest in all affairs for the betterment of the community, both religious and civic. A long-time and faithful member of the Methodist church, he served here as church deacon, Sunday school superintendent and choir singer. In civic affairs, he served as mayor, councilman, school board director and Commercial club member. Always interested in athletics, particularly outdoor sports, he played tennis and. was a member of the Akron baseball earn several years in his prime. For many years he was an active member of Freedom Lodge, No. 434, A. F. & A. M., of Akron, and was serving as Master of the lodge when it occupied its, new temple, erected in 1928. A man of highest integrity, sterling character and pleasant personality, he could count his friends by his acquaintances. His past several fears of invalidism were borne with rare cheerfulness and true Christian fortitude. Left to mourn his departure are: His daughter, Mrs. Idelline Simeon, of Akron; one sister, Mrs. Mary Andrus, of Lansing, Mich.; a grandson, Larry Simeon, of Akron-, and a host of friends. Funeral services were held here in the Masonic Temple Saturday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock, with a large attendance of friends, and members of freedom Lodge were present in a body. Rev. A. A. Howe, of Havelock, Iowa, a former Methodist pastor here, and a warm personal friend of the deceased, conducted the service and paid fine tribute to the upright character and useful life of Dr. Wooton. A male quartet, comprised of Jos. Johnson, Arvel Lake, Karl Silkebakken and Harry Nelson, sang pre-chosen favorite hymns of the deceased, "The Lord is My Shepherd" and "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere," with piano accompaniment by Mrs. Pearl Pollock. At Riverside cemetery the impressive Masonic funeral ration was given by Eugene Lias, with the Masonic brethren exemplifying the burial rites. The active pallbearers were Max Pollock, J. Henry Lucken, W. E. Mellen, Porter Maynard, S. E. Siebens and Keith Knapp, and the honorary pallbearers were A, W. Johnson, Dr, W. J. Brunei Orlan, C. Moore, H. R. Hubbs, W. P. Tucker and Chas. M. Allen. Relatives and friends, present from out of town were: Mr. and Mrs. Harry Christy, Mrs. Cora Swift, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Gale, of Sioux City; Mrs. Fred Bertrand and Gordon and Cheri, of Vermillion; Mr. and Mrs. P. W.-Harrington, of Westfield.
