In 1961, he began work to work at the U.S. Department of Education. There he was the first project manager of the television series Sesame Street. He was involved with the formation of the National Center for Research in Education located at Ohio State University. He also worked with Regional Educational Laboratories across the nation. He belonged to numerous education and research associations. Dr. Boerrigter received many citations and awards for dedicated service. Survived by his wife of 49 years, Carol (Dunker) Boerrigter of Fremont; his son Major Dean & wife Cara Boerrigter and their 4 children of Suffolk, VA; daughter Kay Anne Boerrigter of Hyattsville, MD and sister, Eileen Johnston of Garland, TX. Those preceding him in death are his parents; 1 brother, Donald Boerrigter and 3 sisters, Vera Cook, Mae Anderson and Opal Greenia.
