Pelton mother: Mary Hall Dr. H.W. Murphy who since 1906 has been in the general practice of medicine in Denver, was born in Mitchell county, Iowa, in 1867. He is a son of James and Sally (Judd) Murphy, pioneers in Iowa. The parents came to this state from Kenosha county, Wisconsin, in 1853, making the journey with ox teams and they settled in Mitchell county, where the father traded one team of horses and a yoke of oxen for a farm of one hundred and sixty acres. Upon this property he lived for many years thereafter and at the end of that time retired from active life. He had accumulated large landed holdings and his farm was considered one of the finest in this section of the state. He gave his political allegiance to the democratic party and took an active and prominent part in political affairs, so that his death, which occurred in 1895, deprived Mitchell county of one of her most valued and useful citizens. His wife survived him ten years, dying in 1905. Fourteen children were born to their union, of whom twelve grew to maturity, as follows: Mrs. A.F. Kerr, of San Francisco, California; James A., also of California; Mrs. William Davenport, of Columbia, South Dakota; Mrs. Sid Turner, of the same city; J.P., of Independence, Iowa; A.J. who resides in Mitchell county; Mrs. F.E. Judd, of Los Angeles, Califonia; Mrs. William Hilton of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Mrs. Walter Hall, of Osage, Mitchell county; H.W. of this review; F.P. of Waterloo; and A.W. of Arapahoe, Nebraska. Dr. H.W. Murphy acquired his early education in the public schools of Mitchell county and afterward entered the Iowa City Medical College, from which he was graduated with the degree of M.D. in 1906. In the same year he opened an office in Denver and has since secured a large patronage, for he is recognized as an unusually able physician and surgeon. He keeps in touch with the most advanced thought of his profession and has a high standing in medical circles. In 1893 Dr. Murphy married Miss Edith Pelton, who was born in Osage, Mitchell county, a daughter of W.B. and Mary Pelton, early settlers in that locality. The father was a farmer and stockraiser and also operated a grocery store and meat market. He served as county treasurer for twelve years and was highly respected in political circles. He died in 1897 and is survived by his wife, who makes her home in Waterloo. They became the parents of four children, of whom three are still living: S.R., of Waterloo; Edith, wife of the subject of this review; and Maude, who lives at home. Dr. and Mrs. Murphy have become the parents of three Children; Porter H., who was born in 1895 and who was graduated from the East Waterloo high school; Donald H., who was born in 1902 and is now attending school; and Pauline M., whose birth occurred in 1903. The family are members of the Congregational church. Dr. Murphy is connected fraternally with the Masonic lodge and the Modern Woodmen of America and is a republican in his political beliefs. He never seeks public office, preferring to concentrate his attention upon his profession in which he has made rapid and steady advancement.
