Description	:	Hugh was the third of 13 children, that included six boys and seven girls, born to Daniel and Ida Chidester Sisler. He grew up on a 200-acre farm, where the family produced most of their own food, and his mother cooked on a wood-burning stove. After graduating from high school, he moved to Baltimore, where he worked in the blacksmith shop at Bartlett Hayward and later as a carpenter at Ft. Meade prior to WWII. After graduating from high school, he moved to Baltimore, where he worked in the blacksmith shop at Bartlett Hayward and later as a carpenter at Ft. Meade prior to WWII. During WWII, he joined the U.S. Navy and posted to Attu in the Aleutian Islands for 18 months, where he said, "It was warmer there in the winter than in Garrett County in the summer." He then transferred to Okinawa until the end of the war. After three years of military service he enrolled on the GI Bill in the University of Maryland, College Park, where he received his BS, MS, and PhD in plant pathology and plant physiology. He joined the botany department and taught graduate courses in fungal physiology and studied the effects on nucleic acid and protein in fungal cells and virus infected plants. In 1966, he was an NIH postdoctoral fellow at the Organisch Chemisch Institute in Utrecht, the Netherlands. Dr. Sisler was later appointed as chairman of the University of Maryland, College Park, botany department. After more than 40 years of service to the university, he retired in 1989, with the distinguished appointment of professor emeritus. As a leading authority in the field of fungi toxic mechanisms, he authored numerous publications on metabolic inhibitions and co-edited the book Plant Virology. He served as visiting lecturer to the Greek Atomic Energy Commission, the School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University, and the Environmental Protection Agency. He was chairman and vice chairman of the Cordon Research conferences, as associated editor of phytopathology, and as a member of the Chemical Control Committee. He was the devoted husband of Patricia H. Sisler for 62 years, who preceded him in death on Nov. 25, 2012. He is survived by his children; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
