P. Garrett It is with pain and surprise our people learned of the unexpected death of Dr. James Patterson Garrett, which occurred at his home near Rainsboro Friday night. The doctor had been in feeble health for ten years, but no immediate danger was apprehended. Some eight or ten days before his death he was taken with grip, which at his age, seventy four, proved too much for his already enfeebled health. He had spent half a century, almost, in the active practice of medicine, and was one of the best known and most popular men in the county. His aged wife, who is also prostrated with grip, survives him. The children of this worthy couple are Oscar Newton Garrett, Edwin Forest Garrett, Elizabeth (Ella) Garrett, James Garrett, Milton Ora Garrett, George L. Garrett, Harvey L. Garrett, and Vernon R. Garrett. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. I. Taggart Sunday morning and the interment took place in the Hillsboro Cemetery Sunday afternoon. Garrett, father of the Garrett Brothers of Hillsboro, Ohio; Edwin Garrett of Kentucky; H. L. Garrett of Covington, Virginia, and V. R. Garrett of this place, died at his home near here on Friday the 12th, aged 74 years. He was a native of Paint Township, born near New Petersburg, and began the practice of medicine in this vicinity about fifty years since. He was active and eminently successful in his profession, until failing health compelled him to retire about ten years ago. After giving up public life, he did not seem to lose heart and grow despondent, but maintained the same cheerful, happy disposition that characterized him throughout his public career. He never seemed more happy than when surrounded by the members of his own family. He took great delight in helping to create amusements for them. His theory was that if the children were well entertained at home they were less inclined to seek pleasure and enjoyment elsewhere. He kept his family well supplied with good books and paper and kept himself posted on the literature and the current events of the day, and his fund of knowledge thus gained, together with his general intelligence and sparkling wit, made him an entertaining companion, both for the young and the old. From early training and choice he was a Presbyterian, but, as there was no society of that denomination here, he attended the M. E. Church, as long as the state of his health would permit. He was twice married. The first union, which death soon severed, was with Miss Margaret Elliott. The second marriage, which occurred in 1850, was with Miss Elizabeth Reece, who, in advancing years, is now left to mourn her irreparable loss. Funeral services were held at the family residence on Sabbath by Rev. J. I. Taggart and the remains were taken to Hillsboro for interment. "Highland Pioneer Sketches & Family Genealogies" by Elsie Johnson Ayres Page 181 George L. Garrett was the great-grandson of William and Margaret Ross Garrett who were early pioneers in Paint Twp. They settled in the wilderness and helped change it from its virgin condition to a well-developed farm. Robert Wilson, eldest of the eight Garrett children, married Sarah Patterson. When their oldest son was born, they gave him the name James Patterson Garrett. He was a doctor and practiced in Rainsboro for 45 years. George L. the fourth son of Dr. James P. and Elizabeth Reece Garrett, was born in Rainsboro, Mar. 29, 1860. George Garrett was educated in the Rainsboro school and after a time secured a permit to teach school. He went to Lebanon, Warren Co., where he studied law in the office of his brother-in-law, Albert Anderson. He was admitted to the bar in 1884 and formed a partnership with Hon. Alphonso Hart who had been Lt. Gov. of Ohio. It was a break for a young lawyer who had worked hard to learn the profession. In 1890, he was elected Prosecuting Attorney of the County and re-elected for a second term. He call it "an honor to be as a candidate for a member of the legislature." In 1900 Garrett's office was on Court St., in the building that became known as the place "where the traction stops." He was very fond of reading and when occasion demanded, could become literary minded and turn on descriptive prose or poetry. Several honors were accorded him during his sixty years of continuous service, which ended when deth overtook him, July 1, 1943. He remained a bachelor throughout his lifetime, but spent a lot of time with his brothers, "Newt" and Ora, who operated the Garrett brothers drugstore on N. High. George L. Garrett was one of the most noted speakers of his day, on orator of the old school. He had a thorough knowledge of the area and was a historian. His addresses were combined with wit, humor and pathos, woven with a knowledge of history, literature and elequence.
