Garrett Succumbs at Hospital Wednesday Last Rites Friday George L. Garrett, 83, prominent lawyer, died just before noon on Wednesday at the Hillsboro Hospital after a short illness. Funeral services will be held at the D. M. Evans Funeral Home Friday at 2 P.M. Burial will be made in the Hillsboro Cemetery. Mr. Garrett became ill Sunday night with stomach and bowel trouble and was taken to the hospital Sunday morning. He seemed better and was sitting on the side of the bed talking with friends who had called to see him when he suffered an attack of heart trouble and died almost instantly. He complained of a severe pain in his side. The cause of death was given as coronary embolism. Over a period of a half a century Mr. Garrett had been one of the leading citizens of Highland County. He was a leader in his profession and active in civic affairs. He was a Mason and Elk. His friends were legion, won by his fairness, honesty and kindness. He was a fine conversationalist and had a keen sense of humor. Hillsboro has lost one of its finest citizens, one who has made a distinct contribution to his community. Deceased is survived by a brother, Vernon Garrett, Rainsboro and several nephews and nieces. "The Press Gazette" Hillsboro, Ohio June 29, 1943 Highland County Bar Association Submits Resolution Honoring Local Man The committee appointed by Judge George W. McDowell, president of the Highland County Bar Association, to prepare and submit in the form of a resolution, a memorial to the life, character and services of the late George L. Garrett, has submitted the following: George L. Garrett was born in the Rainsboro neighborhood of Highland County, Ohio, in the month of March, 1860, a son of the late Dr. James Patterson Garrett and Elizabeth Reece Garrett, and died May 23, 1943, at the age of 83 years. He is survived by one brother, Vernon Garrett, and by several nephews and nieces. He was admitted to the Bar of Ohio in the year 1884, and was continuously engaged in the practice of his profession until the time of his death, which came after a brief illness. Endowed with a keen and bright mind, he added to his natural ability and mental stature by constant study, industry and personal application, which enabled him to take a high place in his profession, in which he was proficient in both the civil and criminal practice of the law. Mr. Garrett was elected to the office of prosecuting attorney of Highland County in 1891, and again in 1893, and filled the position with marked ability, skill and credit. He was both, a forceful and skillful advocate and a profound jurist. In the conduct and trial of a case to a jury, his ability was demonstrated not alone by the logic of his argument and clarity of statement which oft times was interspersed with wit and humor of a high order, but also by a vigorous, persuasive and compelling eloquence that carried conviction, sometimes even to opposing counsel. As a jurist he presented his case to the court in a forceful manner, with what he claimed to be the law of the case, and fortified his claims with the citations of judicial authorities in support of his contentions. In the trial of a case, his opposing counsel always knew, or soon learned, that he had an opponent worthy of his best efforts - "a foeman worthy of his steel." He seldom overlooked a point in issue to maintain his position, and brought forth the full force of his knowledge of the law and his ability to present a logical analysis of the proposition as he saw it. His interests and services were not confined alone to his profession as a lawyer, but were extended to the civic activities of Hillsboro and Highland County, which during his long and active life were most beneficial and valuable for the moral and civic welfare of his home town and county. He was a Republican in politics, a Presbyterian, and a member of the Order of the Knights of Pythias, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, and of the various bodies of the Masonic Order. In addition to his ability to address court and jury, Mr. Garrett was unexcelled as a public speaker in this county in his generation. He made many addresses and was always in demand in that capacity by the lodges to which he belonged, patriotic organizations, school and other reunions, historical societies, bar associations, occasionally for a political speech. He was generally conceded to be the best public speaker of his day in this county and community. His addresses combined wit, humor and pathos, which, woven in with his knowledge of history and literature, constituted true eloquence in the best sense of the word. He had a deep appreciation of beauty and the finer sentiments of life, and often times when writing to a friend expressed himself in poetry. This characteristic of Mr. Garrett is well illustrated by a poem which he inscribed to the chairman of this committee at Yuletide a few years ago, and the sentiments there expressed present his idea of friendship. The poem is at follows: Seasons Greeting - My Christmas Creed They tell us all tales about Santa are jokes, They tell us that Christmas is only a hoax, They tell us that Friendship is never sincere, That it's only deceit and a social veneer. But as I grow older, and seek for the truth, I remember the things I was taught in my youth, And I try to believe, that with reindeer and sleigh Old Santa still comes on the Eve of the day, And climbs down the chimney with candies and toys, And fills up the stockings of girls and of boys. Or, opens the doors without turning the knob, And delivers the new-fangled "Thingamabob." And I try to believe, in the old-fashioned way, That the Christ Child was born on the first Christmas Day; That the song of the Angels is echoing still; "Peace be upon earth, and to all men Good Will." And I try to believe that most Friendships are true, And as such a friend, I am counting on you. So, when Yuletide draws near, I drive doubt away, And I wish you and all, a real Christmas Day. Mr. Garrett was a man of many virtues, bountiful culture, refined character and lovable qualities, which, combines with his charming humor and brilliant wit, made him a genial and delightful companion and friend. In profound respect to the memory of George L. Garrett and for his distinguished virtues and services, your Committee submits the foregoing on behalf of The Highland County Bar Association and suggests its adoption and that a copy be spread upon the Journals of both the Common Pleas Court and that of this county and that copies be furnished to his brother and the local press. Garrett was the great-grandson of William and Margaret Ross Garrett who were early pioneers in Paint Twp. They settled in the wilderness and helped change it from its virgin condition to a well-developed farm. Robert Wilson, eldest of the eight Garrett children, married Sarah Patterson. When their oldest son was born, they gave him the name James Patterson Garrett. He was a doctor and practiced in Rainsboro for 45 years. George L. the fourth son of Dr. James P. and Elizabeth Reece Garrett, was born in Rainsboro, Mar. 29, 1860. George Garrett was educated in the Rainsboro school and after a time secured a permit to teach school. He went to Lebanon, Warren Co., where he studied law in the office of his brother-in-law, Albert Anderson. He was admitted to the bar in 1884 and formed a partnership with Hon. Alphonso Hart who had been Lt. Gov. of Ohio. It was a break for a young lawyer who had worked hard to learn the profession. In 1890, he was elected Prosecuting Attorney of the County and re-elected for a second term. He call it "an honor to be as a candidate for a member of the legislature." In 1900 Garrett's office was on Court St., in the building that became known as the place "where the traction stops." He was very fond of reading and when occasion demanded, could become literary minded and turn on descriptive prose or poetry. Several honors were accorded him during his sixty years of continuous service, which ended when death overtook him, July 1, 1943. He remained a bachelor throughout his lifetime, but spent a lot of time with his brothers, "Newt" and Ora, who operated the Garrett brothers drugstore on N. High. George L. Garrett was one of the most noted speakers of his day, on orator of the old school. He had a thorough knowledge of the area and was a historian. His addresses were combined with wit, humor and pathos, woven with a knowledge of history, literature and eloquence.
