H. Shields The sudden death of Dr. O. N. Garrett on Thursday evening was a great shock to the people of this community. He had been at his place of business in the morning and only a few of his friends knew that he was sick. Death resulted from the hardening of the arteries of the heart. Wednesday night Dr. Garrett complained of pains in the arms and chest to his wife, but on Thursday morning seemed to be feeling as well as usual and went to the drug store. At noon he told Mrs. Garrett that they were not busy in the store and he believed he would not go up for awhile although he said nothing about being sick. Mrs. Garrett, who helped with the bookkeeping at the store, went to the store shortly after noon. About four o'clock Dr. Garrett walked to the office of his physician and told him of the pains in his arms and chest and while there suffered greatly. His physician notified Mrs. Garrett of his condition and took him home. The medicine given him seemed to bring relief and the physician left him with his wife. A little later he was taken with very severe pains suffering excruciating agony and Mrs. Garrett telephoned for his physician. When the physician arrived he was dead, having passed away in his chair. The funeral services were held at the Presbyterian Church Sunday afternoon, conducted by Highland Commandery, Masonic Order, and Dr. W. H. Shields. Interment was made in the Hillsboro Cemetery. He is survived by his widow and one son, Lloyd of Morrillton, Arkansas and four brothers, George L. of this place, Vernon of Rainsboro,Ora of Waukomis, Oklahoma and Edward of St. Paul, Minnesota. Dr. Garrett was in his sixty third year having been born near Rainsboro in September 1851. For twenty five years he had been engaged in the drug business in Hillsboro, being the senior member of the firm of Garrett & Ayres. Prior to that time for a number of years he had been in the drug business with an uncle at Cameron, Missouri. He was one of Hillsboro's best and most highly respected citizens taking an active part in business, church, fraternal and social affairs. At the time of his death he was the senior deacon of the First Baptist Church. He had held many offices in the different bodies of the Masonic Order. While quiet and unassuming in manner, Dr. Garrett was a man of great force of character and high ideals which he exemplified in his daily life. Many can testify to his virtues, his kindness, his high sense of honor, his unselfishness, his charity. An eloquent eulogy of his life and the high estimation in which he was held by the people of this community was the large number of people, who is spite of the very bad weather, attended the funeral Sunday afternoon. Dr. Shields appropriately took for the these of his talk, "He Was A Good Man." It is believed Mr. Garrett remarried an Elizabeth (Lizzie) Goodwin around 1892, after his first wife died. I could find no record of the marriage (although a wife is mentioned in the obituary above.) I found some evidence of an Elizabeth Garrett dying in 1927 in Kentucky but it could not be proven.
