The people of this community were shocked when it was learned that Dr. Jay Norris had suddenly passed away here at his home about 10 o'clock last Saturday evening. He had not been feeling well for a few days, though attended to his practice and made a number of calls. Saturday evening he was lying down at his home, when he was taken with a severe abdominal pain, and rising from the bed, fell to the floor, and passed away in a few minutes, the immediate cause of his death being heart complications. Ten minutes before his death he had given a patient a prescription. Dr. Jay was a son of Dr. J.N. and Barbara Norris, was born in Birmingham, and has spent his entire life here. He received his medical education at the Keokuk Medical school, and for 47 years has been a successful physician, careful and conscientious, and will be sadly missed in this community. He is survived by his wife, formerly Miss Cora Crum; five children, June, Joe, William, Nelle, Barbara. Also one brother, Beecher Norris, who has made his home here the past two years, they being the remaining members of the Norris family. Dr. J.N. Norris settled here in about 1839, and when the town was laid out named it Birmingham. In the course of years his son Jay, and the passing of Dr. Jay leaves without a Doctor of the Norris name in the history of Birmingham. The funeral service was held in the Methodist church on Monday afternoon, it being not large enough to accommodate the crowd from all walks of life, assembled to pay their respect and do him honor. Those from a distance at the funeral were: Mrs. Caves and son Max of Oskaloosa; Harold Turk and wife of Eldon; V.L. Sheridan and wife of Packwood; Jack Linder and wife Batavia; W.E. House, William Ensley of Marshalltown; Mesdames Homer Murray, Chas. Carter, Forrest Johnston, H.C. Raney, Misses Lillian Grove, Harriet Conklin, Clara Linder, J.L. Raney and wife, Robt.
