Read More	John Charles Lawrence, Jr. passed away on December 19, 2006. He was born on December 24, 1949. Dr. Lawrence was Professor of Pharmacology at the University of Virginia. He was an avid golfer, loved backpacking, gardening and beekeeping. He obtained his bachelors degree in Chemistry at Duke University and earned a Ph.D. in Pharmacology in 1978 with Dr. Joseph Larner, who is internationally known for his work on insulin action and diabetes. After his Ph.D. training in which he made a number of significant discoveries about the mode of insulin action, he did postdoctoral work on ion channels with Dr. William Catterall, chair of the Pharmacology Department at the University of Washington in Seattle. When he finished his training in 1980, John became an Assistant Professor at Washington University in St. Louis. At Washington University, he returned to his prime area of interest, diabetes and insulin action. During his 16 years at Washington University, John rose to Professor and played a key role in the University's influential Diabetes Center. His scientific work uncovered many new facets of insulin signaling within adipose, liver and muscle cells and was recognized around the world for its thoroughness, attention to detail and critical thought. At Washington University, he discovered an important protein by which insulin regulates information flow from DNA to new cellular proteins. In 1996, John returned to the University of Virginia as a Professor of Pharmacology and became an influential member of Virginia's diabetes research community. He helped Virginia obtain one of the few NIH funded Diabetes Centers in the country and was the Associate Director of the University's Diabetes and Endocrinology Research Center. He served on multiple national scientific review committees and was frequently asked to speak at national meetings dealing with the biochemical pathways by which insulin affects metabolism. He continued his work on insulin action and over the 10 years, discovered two other proteins with significant roles in insulin action. One of these proteins is involved in regulating storage of fat in liver and other tissues. John's work in defining the functions of these critical proteins substantially enhanced understanding insulin action in healthy individuals and how its action is impaired in those with diabetes mellitus. Dr. Lawrence had a tremendous impact on the careers of his students and fellows. In his time at the University, he has trained 15 fellows who have gone on to significant roles in industry or the academic community. He will be remembered by his friends and colleagues as a brilliant and influential scientist, an excellent mentor to students and fellows, yet at the same time as a fun loving individual who loved hiking in the Grand Canyon, golfing and his family. He will be missed in all of these areas. He was preceded in death by his mother, Geraldine "Gerry" Hare-Lawrence; and his sister, Lynn Lawrence. Dr. Lawrence is survived by his wife, Linda Lawrence; his three sons: Justin E. Lawrence, Matthew W. Lawrence, and Robert T. Lawrence, all of Charlottesville; his father, Dr. John C. Lawrence of Lumberton, NC; and four sisters: Pam Lawrence Kattan of Raleigh, North Carolina, Deborah Lawrence of Lumberton, North Carolina, Kay Lawrence Liles of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, and Amy Lawrence of Raleigh, North Carolina. A graveside service will be held at Elim, South Carolina. A memorial service in January at the University of Virginia will be announced at a later date.
