Description	:	John Clinton Slifer was born December 17, 1900 in Downsville, MD. His father, John Clinton Slifer was buried that same day. His father died 12-13-1900. In 1910, his mother, Cora Virginia Slifer, and six sons, moved to Kansas with all their possessions in a railroad car to join oldest son and only daughter who had encouraged them to relocate to better farm ground near Nickerson. Read More	John Clinton Slifer was born December 17, 1900 in Downsville, MD. His father, John Clinton Slifer was buried that same day. His father died 12-13-1900. In 1910, his mother, Cora Virginia Slifer, and six sons, moved to Kansas with all their possessions in a railroad car to join oldest son and only daughter who had encouraged them to relocate to better farm ground near Nickerson. John graduated from Reno County High School in 1921. He attended McPherson College then transferred to University of Kansas where he graduated in 1926. During his college years, he began selling Wearever Aluminum where he would demonstrate the product in homes by preparing a meal for the family. He rose in the company to District Manager in Cleveland, Ohio and Detroit, MI. areas. In the early 1930's he was told he had been promoted to their New York office immediately. He didn't like the company's attitude and promptly quit. He had been contemplating attending Kirksville Osteopathic College so that night they packed up and drove to Missouri. After graduating in January, 1935 Dr. Slifer began looking for an area to begin his practice. He had been in Marion county selling aluminum wear and liked the location so he settled in Florence that March. His first offices were at 509 Main until February 1941 when he moved to 609 Main where his "baby clinic" thrived on the second floor. From August 7, 1935 until May 19, 1960 he delivered 568 babies in homes and at the clinic. In 1960 he built the Slifer Clinic at 603 Main where he retired from practice in June 1982. His community involvement was varied from serving as mayor, Marion County Lake Board, Florence Consolidated School Board, Rotarian, Mason, Florence Historical Society and Florence United Methodist Church. While mayor he discovered the city had been granted funds for a dike in 1940's and the offer was soon to expire. Work began on the present levee in early 1960's. His first wife, Grace Marie Hughes passed away on June 11, 1959. They were parents to one daughter, Lois Marie. In 1960 he married Eleanor Maxine Philo Zook. In addition to their two sons, John Clinton III and Lindley Philo, their family included Wava Judith and Ramon Russell Zook. Dr. John C. Slifer passed way July 17, 1998 and is buried in Hillcrest Cemetery, Florence. Compiled and Written by Paulette Zook
