Description	:	PITTSFIELD - John P. Dow, M.D., passed away peacefully at his home with his family on Oct. 11, 2009. He was born on Aug. 13, 1934 to Leroy and Margaret Stoddard Dow. He graduated from Foxcroft Academy, Bowdoin College and Harvard Medical School. He did his internship and residency at Hartford Hospital, Hartford, Conn. He relaxed with his guitar and the piano; he had fun fishing, but his real passion was for his medical family practice, which he had in Pittsfield from 1963 until he retired because of ill health in 1999. He was born on Aug. 13, 1934 to Leroy and Margaret Stoddard Dow. He graduated from Foxcroft Academy, Bowdoin College and Harvard Medical School. He did his internship and residency at Hartford Hospital, Hartford, Conn. He relaxed with his guitar and the piano; he had fun fishing, but his real passion was for his medical family practice, which he had in Pittsfield from 1963 until he retired because of ill health in 1999. He was chief of staff of Sebasticook Valley Hospital for 13 years, was SAD school doctor for 15 years, and was the Maine Central Institute physician for 10 years. In 2000, he, Dr. Thomas Pierce and Dr. John Crane started the Hartland Free Clinic. In 1963, he was responsible for starting the Somerset and Maine Medical Association utilization review process for medicine. He was a member of the National Board of Medical Examiners. He was awarded the Pittsfield Jaycees Distinguished Service Award, the Mary Chandler Lowell Award from Foxcroft Academy and the President's Award of the Maine Medical Association in 1982. He was a member of the Congregational Church and the Pittsfield Masonic Lodge, Meridian 125, AF & AM. He is survived by his wife and lifelong partner, Louise Thomas Dow; his four sons, John Thomas Dow and his partner, Bonnie Blohm, and their children, Cameron Dow, Luka Dow, Tessa Dow, Alex Blohm, Eric Blohm and Julian Blohm; Michael Prescott Dow and his wife, Katherine, and their daughters, Natalie Dow and Audrey Dow; William Lincoln Dow and his wife, Jill, and their children, Oscar Tillson Dow and Daisy Dow, and David Stoddard Dow and his wife, Jennifer, and their son, Ryker; his sisters-in-law, Beryl Dow and Irene Dow; his brothers-in-law, Virgil Warren and Robert Thomas and his wife, Sandra; a special nephew, Malcolm Dow and his wife, Georganne, and by many other close, wonderful nephews and nieces. He loved his family and will be missed by all. Jay was predeceased by his parents; three brothers, Malcolm Dow, Alfred Dow and Russell Dow; and by his sister, Dorothy Dow Warren. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m., Friday, Oct. 16, at Shorey-Nichols Funeral Home, 191 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield. A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 17, at the funeral home. Interment will immediately follow at the Village Cemetery, Peltoma Avenue, Pittsfield.
