Description	:	Statesville Dr. J. Layton Mauzé, III, husband of Harriet Hayes Mauzé, passed away on June 7th, 2012. He was born in Huntington, West Virginia in 1936 to the late Sue Dunn and Dr. J. Layton Mauzé, Jr. Dr. Mauzé attended McCallie Military Academy in Chattanooga, TN, achieved his B.A. from Westminster College in Fulton, MO in 1959, his B.D. from Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, VA in 1962, and his Doctor of Divinity from Westminster College in 1977. Layton Mauzé, III, husband of Harriet Hayes Mauzé, passed away on June 7th, 2012. He was born in Huntington, West Virginia in 1936 to the late Sue Dunn and Dr. J. Layton Mauzé, Jr. Dr. Mauzé attended McCallie Military Academy in Chattanooga, TN, achieved his B.A. from Westminster College in Fulton, MO in 1959, his B.D. from Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, VA in 1962, and his Doctor of Divinity from Westminster College in 1977. He was ordained on July 22, 1962 by the Presbytery of Winchester, Synod of Virginia. A member of First Presbyterian Church in Statesville, Dr. Mauzé served as Senior Pastor for the church from 1971-82. He also served First Presbyterian Church in Fort Smith, AR, Covenant Presbyterian Church in Staunton, VA, Front Royal Presbyterian Church in Front Royal, VA, Ginter Park Presbyterian Church in Richmond, VA, First Presbyterian Church in Danville, VA and First Presbyterian Church in Shreveport, LA. Even in retirement, Dr. Mauzé continued his ministerial work, serving as the interim pastor for First Presbyterian Church in Asheville, NC, Second Presbyterian Church in Charleston, SC, First Presbyterian Church in Raleigh, NC, and First Presbyterian Church in Gastonia, NC. Dr. Mauzé was very active in the communities where he served as Pastor. He was on the Board of Directors for Leadership Fort Smith and Arkansas Valley Habitat for Humanity. He acted as President on the Hospice House Board in Fort Smith, AR, Trustee for Sparks Regional Medical Center and Chair of the Pastoral Care Committee for Sparks Regional Medical Center in Fort Smith, AR. Highly regarded as a supporter of quality Christian education, Dr. Mauzé was selected to serve as a trustee for Austin College in Sherman, TX, Lyon College in Batesville, AR and Presbyterian School of Christian Education. He was Chair of the Coordinating Council, Presbytery of Arkansas and a member of the Committee on Ministry, Presbytery of Arkansas and Arkansas Presbyterian Foundation. In addition to his wife, his family includes children, Michelle M. Rokes and husband, David, J. Layton Mauzé, IV and wife, Lynn, Mary M. Stratos and husband Paul; grandchildren, Sonya Rokes and husband, Craig Carlisle, Carla Robertson and husband, Todd, Kate Hand and husband, Robert, Elizabeth Mauzé, Caroline Stratos, Nick Stratos; great-grandchildren, Raya Robertson and Max Robertson; brothers, George Mauzé and wife, Ann, Jim Mauzé and wife, Sonni; brother-in-law, John Gould; sister-in-law, and brother-in-law, Ken and Beth Hayes; and many loving nieces and nephews. Dr. Mauzé was predeceased by his sister Suzanne Gould. In his many years of service to the Lord, Dr. Mauzé gave his undivided attention, compassionate care, and love to everyone he met. No one had a more loving heart, setting a wonderful example to his family and all that he served. The family will receive friends on Sunday, June 10, 2012 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the home of his daughter, Michelle Rokes, 130 N. Mulberry Street, Statesville, North Carolina. A celebration of Dr. Mauzé's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 11, 2012 at First Presbyterian Church in Statesville, North Carolina. A private family burial will be held on Tuesday, June 12, 2012 at Stonewall Jackson Cemetery in Lexington, VA. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Habitat for Humanity of Iredell County, 1382-A Shelton Avenue, Statesville, NC 28677, Fifth Street Ministries, 1421 Fifth Street, Statesville, NC 28677 or to the charity of choice .
