The Roanoke physician and former president of the Virginia Department of Health took the time to remember the details of his patients' lives. "He was one those doctors who always found something interesting in the people he treated," said his daughter, Mary Moffett H. Priddy. Dr. Hutcheson, who practiced in Roanoke for 35 years before retiring in 1985, died Sunday. He was 83. A graduate of Washington and Lee University, he earned a medical degree at the University of Virginia School of Medicine in 1943 and served as medical officer in the Navy in the latter years of World War II. After a fellowship in internal medicine in New Orleans, he settled in Roanoke, where he later served as president of the Roanoke Academy of Medicine. He was also a fellow of the American College of Physicians and a former vice president of the Medical Society of Virginia. Dr. Hutcheson was appointed to the state board of health in the 1960s and became its president in 1967. He served on the board until 1976. Henry Page Mauck, a cousin, said Hutcheson was a family man, balancing his practice with his duties as the father of six. "He was recognized by people, generally, as just a fine person," Mauck said. Dr. Hutcheson was also well-known in the church community. He was a former trustee at Second Presbyterian Church in Roanoke, where he was named father of the year for religious activities in 1959. After he retired, he served as a consultant to the Social Security Office of Hearings and Appeals for a decade and volunteered his time with church and community service organizations. Survivors include his wife, Mary Moffett Hutcheson; two sons, Robert S. Hutcheson III, of Knoxville, Tenn., and J. Randolph Hutcheson, of Richmond; four daughters, Frances H. Garrard, of Taylorsville, N.C., Mary Moffett H. Priddy, of Richmond, Elizabeth H. Marth, of Richmond, and Alice H. Brafford, of Charlotte, N.C.; and 16 grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Second Presbyterian Church in Roanoke.
